Historic Sites
GOLIAD ......
Goliad, Refugio and Victoria are three ad-
joining counties in Southeast Texas with
many historic sites. Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda
mapped the coast nearby in 1519; Cabeza de
Vaca and La Salle crossed the region in
their wanderings.
Few areas of Texas can equal this region
in historic interest, and it is quite near other
regions that were the scenes of the writing
of much of Texas' history. These include
Gonzales, Austin, San Antonio, Houston and
others pictured in these historic pages of the
Texas Almanac. A "Trail of the Six Flags"
tour leaflet and other information may
be obtained through local chambers of
commerce.
Texas' war for independence from Mexico
bathed Refugio and Goliad in blood and en-
shrined their heroes forever as patriots. The
Battle of Coleto brought the defeat of Texans
led by Col. James W. Fannin on March 19-20,
1836, after the March 14 Battle of Refugio
had resulted in the complete destruction of
the last Spanish mission built in Texas,
Nuestra Senora del Refugio. Texans defeated
in these battles were held prisoner at La
Bahia Mission, then massacred on Palm Sun-
day upon orders of Santa Anna.
Goliad is the site of two missions, Nuestra
Senora del Espiritu Santo in Goliad StateWhBIB
