TEXAS ALMANAC-1970-1971
Entering the United States Navy, he rose to the
rank of Lieutenant (jg) and saw much active service
during World War II, including the D-Day landing in
Normandy.
Mr. Moroney joined The News when he was re-
leased from active duty with the Navy, starting on
the staff as a reporter in 1946. His different assign-
ments have included serving as an advertising sales-
man and working also in the promotion and circula-
tion departments. He spent a year in various radio
and television departments of Station WFAA.
After being named assistant to the business man-
ager in 1950, he moved into the executive department
as assistant treasurer. He was elected to the board of
directors in 1952, made treasurer in 1955 and elevated
to vice-president and treasurer in 1960.
Joe A. Lubben
The executive vice-president and general manager,
a native of Galveston, has had wide experience in
nearly every department of the newspaper. His father,
John F. Lubben, also a Galveston native, was a di-
rector and secretary-treasurer of A. H. Belo Corpora-
tion for more than 30 years.
As a youth Joe A. Lubben served as a carrier for
the Galveston paper and worked in its classified ad-
vertising department. He was educated in the Gal-JOE A. LUBBEN

veston public schools and the University of Texas.
Mr. Lubben joined The Dallas News in 1928. He
served as reporter for The News, and the afternoon
affiliate it then published, The Dallas Journal, in
practically all the local assignments. He was also
state editor and night city editor of The News.
Transferring in 1933 to the advertising department,
he became assistant advertising manager in 1944 and
assistant business manager two years later. He was
elected to the board of directors in 1947 and became
business manager in 1950. His elevation to vice-presi-
dent was in 1955, to senior vice-president in 1960, ex-
ecutive vice-president in 1964 and general manager
in 1968.
Sol Katz
The assistant general manager of The News was
born in Corsicana, Texas, but moved with his parents
to Dallas and was educated in the Dallas public
school system, being graduated from high school in

His association with The News began earlier, as
a carrier of the paper, and he became a permanent
employe as a 16-year-old in 1929 on a phone desk in
the circulation department. He advanced rapidly to
district manager, zone manager, city circulation man-
ager and, in 1950, became circulation manager. He
was elected to the board of directors in 1960. In
1968 he was made assistant general manager.
He is active in newspaper organizations, including
the Texas Circulation Managers Association, of which
he is past president, and International Circulation
Managers Association.
Richard D. Blum
A native of Louisville, Ky., Richard D. Blum
joined The News in 1957 as administrative assistant
and in 1964 was made assistant to the president. He
