National Parks, Historical Sites, Recreation Areas in TexasTexas has two national parks, a national seashore,
a biological preserve and several historic sites,
memorials and recreation areas, under supervision of
the U.S. Department of Interior. In addition, the state
has four national forests (see index) under the juris-
diction of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Alibates Flint Quarries National Park Service, Na-
tional Monument consists of 92.56 acres in Potter Coun-
ty. For more than 10,000 years, pre-Columbian Indians
dug agatized limestone from the quarries to make
projectile points, knives, scrapers and other tools. The
area is presently undeveloped and access is by guided
tours only.
Amistad Recreation Area contains the U.S. portion
of Amistad Reservoir on the Rio Grande River. Of 65,000
acres in the area, 43,250 acres are in U.S. LimitedWalking tours of the Alibates Flint Quarries provide a
glimpse into unwritten history of Texas.camping space, and camping from boats permitted on
shore. Commercial campgrounds, motels, hotels in
area. Open year round.
Big Bend National Park, established in 1944, has
spectacular mountain and desert scenery, a variety of
unusual geological structures. Located in the great
bend of the Rio Grande River, the international bound-
ary between U.S. and Mexico. Park contains 708,221
acres; numerous camp sites are located in park and
the Chisos Mountains Lodge has accommodations for
approximately 150 guests. Write for reservations to

Big Thicket National Preserve, set at 84,550 acres in
Polk, Hardin, Liberty, Tyler, Jasper, Orange and Jef-
ferson Counties, was authorized Oct. 11, 1974, to pro-
tect biological crossroads of the flora and fauna of the
north, south, east and west. Acquisition of land is to be
completed in 1980. Three of 12 units may be available
for public use by October 1977.
Chamizal National Memorial on Cordova Island in
El Paso County memorializes in 54.9 acres the peaceful
settlement by the Chamizal Treaty, signed in 1963, of a
99-year boundary dispute between U.S. and Mexico.

Fort Davis National Historic Site in Jeff Davis Coun-
ty was a key post in the West Texas defense system,
guarding immigrants on the San Antonio-El Paso
Road. The 460-acre historic site was established in
1963. Lodging at Alpine, Marfa or Indian Lodge in
Davis Mountains State Park. Open year round.
Guadalupe Mountains National Park, established
1966, consists of 77,500 acres in Hudspeth and Culber-
son Counties. A mountain mass rising from the desert
contains portions of the world's most extensive and
significant Permian limestone fossil reef. Also fea-
tures a tremendous earth fault, Texas' highest peaks,
McKittrick Canyon, unusual flora and fauna. A colorful
record of the past. Has small primitive campground at
mouth of Pine Springs Canyon; information station and
55 miles of hiking trails. Open year round. Lodging at
Van Horn, Texas; White City or Carlsbad, N.Mex.
Lake Meredith Recreation Area, about 35 miles
northeast of Amarillo, consists of a reservoir behind
Sanford Dam on the Canadian River, in Moore, Hutch-
inson and Potter Counties. Occupies 44,951 acres;
popular for water-based activities. Marine launching
ramps, picnic areas, unimproved campsites. Commer-
cial lodging and trailer hookups available in nearby
towns. Open year round.
Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Site includes
the boyhood home of the 36th President of U.S., and
the Johnson Settlement in Johnson City; free bus tour
starting at the LBJ State Park includes the LBJ Birth-
place, old school, cemetery and close-up exterior look at
the Texas White House. Site, in Blanco and Gillespie
Counties, was established Jan. 14, 1970, and contains
238 acres. Open year round. No camping on site; com-
mercial campground, motels in area.
Padre Island National Seashore consists of a 67.5-
mile stretch of a barrier island along the Gulf Coast;
noted for its wide sand beaches, excellent fishing and
abundant bird and marine life. Contains 133,918 acres
in Kleberg, Willacy and Kenedy Counties. Open year
round. One paved campground (fee charged) located
north of Malaquite Beach, unpaved (primitive) camp-
ground area south of beach. Commercial lodging
available outside boundaries of National Seashore.
San Jose Mission State and National Historic Site is
administered by Texas Parks and Wildlife Depart-
ment in cooperation with Archdiocese of San Antonio,
National Park Service, San Antonio Conservation Soci-
ety and County of Bexar. San Jose Mission, regarded as
one of finest missions in North America, was establish-
ed in 1720 by Captain Juan Valdez, lieutenant general
of Province of Texas. Picnic lunches may be eaten on
ground. Open year round.
