44 TEXAS ALMANAC-1980-1981
Interscholastic League
The University Interscholastic League, which gov-
erns literary and athletic competition among public
schools in Texas, was organized in 1910 as a division of
the University of Texas extension service for public
schools. Initially, it sponsored forensic competition.
In 1915, however, public schools asked UIL to spon-
sor a track and field meet. Football and basketball
were brought under UIL in 1920 and other sports have
been added.
UIL was the first organization of its type in the na-
tion to sponsor both literary and athletic events. It also
is the nation's largest, with over 1,130 4-year high
schools across the state participating in UIL's 38 divi-
sions of literary, athletic and music competition.
Team championships in athletic events are as fol-
lows:
Football
From 1920 until 1947, UIL named only one state

- AAAA, AAA, AA and A - was introduced. Class B, 8-
