area transferred from Board of Control in 1949; the
rest from the Archbishop of San Antonio in 1956. The
hil!, a historical site, bears a memorial shaft dedicated
to Capt. Nicholas Dawson and his men, who fought at
Salado Creek in 1842, in the war for Texas' Independ-
ence from Mexico, and to the men of the "black bean
lottery" (1843), of the Mier Expedition of 1842. Bodies of
these heroes were brought to Monument Hill for re-
burial in 1848. In LaGrange, old tree under which Cap-
tain Dawson recruited ill-fated expedition still stands.
Palmetto State Park, a scenic park, is 263 acres
along the San Marcos River in Gonzales County The
land was deeded in 1934-1937 by private owners. Arte-
sian wells produce distinctive, sulphur-laden water.
Nearby Gonzales and Ottine important in early Texas
history. Gonzales settled in 1825 as center of Green De-
Witt's colonies. Nearby is site of Elks' Hospital and Texas
Rehabilitation Center.
Pedernales Falls State Park, 4,851 acres in Blanco
County about 14 miles east of Johnson City. Acquired
from private owners in 1970 along banks of scenic
Pedernales River. This area, formerly Circle Bar
Ranch, typifies Edwards Plateau with live oaks, deer,
turkey and stone hills. Golden-cheeked Warbler nests
here
*San Jose Mission State Park. - (See San Antonio,
San Jose Mission State Park.)
*Sebastopol House State Historic Structure in Se-
guin, Guadalupe County, was acquired by purchase in
1976 from Seguin Conservation Society; approximately
two acres. Period furnishing is on display in the resi-
dence; pending facility repair and development.
Stephen F. Austin State Park, is 664 acres along the
Brazos River in Austin County, classified a historical
park and named for the "Father of Texas." The area
was deeded by the San Felipe de Austin Corporation
and the San Felipe Park Association in 1940. Site of
township of San Felipe was seat of government where
conventions of 1832 and 1833 and consultation of 1835
held. These led to Texas Declaration of Independence.
San Felipe was home of Stephen F. Austin and other fa-
mous early Texans; home of Texas' first Anglo news-
paper (the Texas Gazette) founded in 1829; postal sys-
tem of Texas originated here; beginning of Texas
Rangers.
Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park, classified a
historical park, consists of 154 acres southwest of
Navasota in Washington County. The land was deededby private owners in 1916. The land includes the site of
the signing in 1836 of the Texas Declaration of Inde-
pendence from Mexico, as well as the site of the later
signing of the Constitution of the Republic of Texas. In
1842 and 1845, the land included the capitol of the
Republic; it also included the home of Anson Jones, last
president of the Republic of Texas.
CORPUS CHRISTI
*Copano Bay State Fishing Pier, a 6-acre park with
restaurant and fishing pier, located five miles north of
Rockport in Aransas County. Jurisdiction transferred
from the Texas Highway Department in 1967; operated
by leased concession
*Fannin Battleground State Park, a historical site,
is 13 acres east of Goliad in Goliad County. The park
was acquired by legislative enactment in 1965. At this
site on March 20, 1836, Col. J. W. Fannin surrendered to
Mexican Gen. Jose Urrea after Battle of Coleto; 342
massacred and 28 escaped near what is now Goliad
State Park. Near Fannin site is Gen. Zaragoza's Birth-
place; Goliad State Park containing partially restored
Mission Nuestra Senora del Espiritu Santo de Zuniga.
Goliad State Park is 184 acres classified a historical
site along the San Antonio River in Goliad County. The
land was deeded in 1931 by the City and County of
Goliad. Nearby are the sites of several battles in the
Texas fight for independence from Mexico. The park
includes a replica of Mission Nuestra Senora del Espiritu
Santo de Zuniga originally established 1722 and settled
at its present site in 1749. Park unit contains Gen.
Zaragoza's Birthplace which is located at Presidio la
Bahia. Park property also contains ruins of Mission
Nuestra Senora del Rosario, established 1754, located
four miles west of Goliad on U.S. 59. Other nearby
points of historical interest are restored Presidio Nues-
tra Senora de Loreto de la Bahia, established 1722 and
settled on site in 1749; it is located V4 mile south of park
on U.S. 183. Goliad memorial shaft marking common
burial site of Fannin and victims of Goliad massacre
(1836) is near Presidio la Bahia.
Goose Island State Park in Aransas County is 307
acres, classified as recreational; it was deeded by pri-
vate owners in 1931-1935. Located here is the tree esti-
mated to be 2,000 years old and listed by American
Forestry Assn. as the national co-champion live oak;
certified largest live oak in Texas in 1969. Aransas
Wildlife Refuge, wintering ground for rare and endan-
gered whooping cranes, is just across St. Charles Bay.
