Doyle Herndon
Dies in April
Doyle Preston Herndon, 56, con-
troller at HSU for nearly a decade,
died April 13.
He was a 1947 graduate of Sweet-
water High School and held a
bachelor's degree from Texas Chris-
tian University.
A partner with Gwinn, Herndon
and Scott CPA firm in Fort Worth
from 1958-78, he came to HSU as
controller in 1978.
Herndon's wife, Dr. Rosanna
Taylor Herndon, professor of speech
communication and head of the
Department of Communication, is a
survivor as well as a stepson, Richard
E. Miller of Fort Worth; a step-
daughter, Cecilia Miller of Austin;
and a brother, John Herndon III, of
Long Beach, Calif.
Angelo. An active member of the Boy Scouts
of America for 63 years, he was a longtime
camp director for 20 years at Camp Tonkawa,
Abilene, at the time of his death and held posi-
tions such as scout master and jamboree
leader. He was also an Eagle Scout and a reci-
pient of the Silver Beaver Award. Besides his
wife, Vera, of San Angelo, two sons with HSU
connections are survivors: Joe Ed, BBA '62,
of Abilene, and Kenneth W., BA '61 & ME
'68, as well as three other sons and a
daughter. A brother, Dr. Paul W. Burnam,
BA '34, of 188 Ronald Blvd., Lafayette, LA
70503, also survives.
Walker D. Castleman, 84, ex '23, of
Abilene, died in February. He was employed
by the Dunigan Tool and Supply Co. for 40
years and Abilene Sales for 10 years.
Charlene La Verne Coquat, 61, BA '50,
Box 441, Three Rivers, TX 78071, died Jan.
1. She was a school teacher for 38 years.
C.W. "Bud" Ellis, 84, father of Dr. Ray
Ellis, dean of HSU's Graduate School, died
March 3 in Abilene. Other survivors include
three grandchildren: Dr. Bill Ellis, BA 75,
of Alexandria, La.; Dr. Robert R. Ellis, BS
'77, of Fort Worth; and Mrs. Nancy Ruth
(Ellis) Kuclnsk, BBS '83, of Lubbock.
Hilllard Fatherree, 90, BA '28, former
Abilene school administrator and church
leader, died Feb. 12 in Fort Worth. He was
principal at Abilene High School for five years
and helped form the National Educators' In-
surance Company, Fort Worth, retiring after a
30 year career. He also served as a Spanish
teacher at Abilene High for 10 years and an
assistant superintendent for four years before
being named principal at Abilene High. As
principal of one of the largest high schools in
Texas during the war years, he was creditedwith leading the movement to adjust the
school curriculum to meet the changing needs
of students. Under his direction, dozens of
"war courses," requested by the War and
Navy departments, were introduced. A metal
shop was added to the school's vocational
department during his administration. His
wife, Eloise, is a survivor.
Ana Louise (Wright) Hamilton, 84, BS
'48, died recently in Lubbock. She taught
school for 35 years in Texas, Oklahoma and
New Mexico. Survivors include her husband,
Norman; a daughter, Norma Lou Rainer,
BA '59, of Floydada, and her husband, Bob-
by, BA '65; two sisters and two brothers.
Morris Villiam Harper, 68, ex '40, of
1325 Glenwood, Abilene, TX 79605, died
April 14 in Abilene. He retired in 1984 from
West Texas Utilities. His wife, Dorothy, is
among survivors.Juanita Walton
Juanita Sibyl Tubb Walton, wife of
HSU's vice president emeritus
William Truett Walton, BA '20,
died April 19.
Born in Canadian, Tex., she
moved to Abilene in 1927.
She and Dr. Walton were married
Dec. 20, 1923 in Canadian.
Following her 1918 graduation
from Canadian High School, she at-
tended Texas Women's University in
Denton and later attended Christian
College, Columbian, Mo., before
becoming a graduate of Chicago Art
Institute in 1923.
She was a member of the HSU
Roundtable, an organization made
up of wives of faculty and staff of
HSU, and had served as secretary
and treasurer and was a member of
First Baptist Church.
Besides her husband, survivors are
a daughter, Mrs. Fleur (Raymond
H.) Steinhardt, '49 graduate of
Los Angeles, Calif., a son, Travis of
Severna Park, Md. and a grandson.
Carl Max Jones, 49, BA '60 of Hawley,
Tex., died March 12 in Houston. He.was a
research chemist for the National Aeronautics
and Space Administration for 11 years. Sur-
vivors include a brother, Frank H. Jones,
ME '50, Hawley and a nephew, Randall W.
Jones, BBS '86, Abilene.
Ewell Esco "Kim" Kimbler, Jr., 59, ex
'59, of Prescott, Ariz., died Feb. 26. He
retired in 1985 after many years as an ex-
ecutive at Sears Roebuck and Co. Among sur-
vivors are his wife the former Lillian L.
Goodyear, ex '47, and brothers Dr. G.
Harvey Kimbler, BS '51, of Yuma, Ariz.,
and Dr. W.C. Kimbler, BS '62, of Casa
Grande, Ariz.
Earl Leandtroop, MA '40, died Feb. 1.
His wife, Faye, of 1828 Gidding, Clovis, NM,
88101, survives.
Clifford Monroe Lester, 90, ex '42, of
Stamford, Tex., educational, civic and
religious leader, died March 3 in Stamford. He
had served as a school principal and was
manager of Stamford Electric Cooperative
from 1943 until retirement in 1968. Among
survivors are his wife, Mary, of 1109 Wells,
Stamford, TX 79553; a son, Dr. Mac Lester of
Abilene, whose wife is the former Era Jo Up-
shaw, MM '76 and Board of Development
member; and grandsons, Thomas Lester, ex
'79, of New York City, and Cliff M. Lester,
Jr., BBA '83, of Fort Worth.
Joyce A. (Elrod, BA '40) Lindsey, 68, of
1702 Jeanette, Abilene, TX 79603, a teacher
who received the Abilene Educator of the
Year award in 1984, died April 2 in Fort
Worth, Tex. A teacher for 31 years, she was
the head speech pathologist for the Abilene
ISD. She received the Award of Honor fromthe Texas Speech, Hearing and Language
Association in 1984.
J. Lowell Littleton, 83, BA '24, charter
member of the HSU Cowboy Band and an
Ozona banker and rancher, died March 17.
He was a lifetime member of the President's
Club and former member of the Board of
Development at HSU. He was Ozona's
Outstanding Citizen in 1983. His wife, Lucille
(Haraberger) a 1927 grad and former
trustee, is a survivor.
Dub Mason, Jr., 66, BA '50, of 4126
Russell, Abilene, TX 79605, an Air Force
veteran, a former Reporter-News reporter and
photographer and a television news director,
died April 11 in Abilene. During his career he
had served as director of the press center atLunelle Hemphill
Mrs. Lunelle Nix Hemphill,
78, BA '29, wife of Dr. Lee Hem-
phill, HSU vice president emeritus,
died March 22 in Abilene.
Born Sept. 13, 1908 at Lockney,
Tex., she graduated from Lamesa
High School, Lamesa, Tex., as
valedictorian in 1925 and from HSU
in 1929, magna cum laude.
While a student at HSU, she was
assistant hostess at Mary Frances
Hall.
She moved from Littlefield to
Abilene in 1959 with her husband
when he became vice president for
development at HSU and had lived
here since that time. She and her
husband were married Aug. 26,
1935, in Lamesa. She taught school
in the Lamesa school system for
seven years before her marriage.
She was named recipient of the
John J. Keeter, Jr., Alumni Award
from HSU in 1979. She and her
Bergstrom AFB in Austin, as editor of the
Eastland Telegram, director of public relations
and counselor at The Bridge (a job placement
center in Abilene), news director at KTXS-TV,
and director of public relations for the
Chamber of Commerce. His wife, the former
Jo E. Gilstrap, is a survivor.
Mary Mount-Campbell, 83, wife of
former HSU physics professor Paul Mount-
Campbell (1966-1973), died April 30 in
Dallas. Mount-Campbell's address in Abilene
is 1250 EN 10th St. #337, Abilene, TX
79601.
Mary Nell Paul, wife of J. Taylor Paul,
BBA '49, of 3208 Sunnybrook, Tyler, TX
75701, died April 6. He is a member of the
HSU Board of Development.
William Earl (Bill) Ragsdale, 73, BA
'35, a microbiologist, died in November 1986.
His wife, Ruth, of 14020 Stardust, Dallas, TX
75234, survives as does a brother, Vernon, of
Glendale, Calif., BS '39.
William Rathmell, 83, ex '27, died Jan.
28. He attended HSU on a football scholar-
ship and spent 37 years with the Department
of Justice and served as a trustee of the Mes-
quite ISD for a number of years. He is survived
by his wife, the former Mardelle Hazel, ex
'27, of 701 S. Alamo, Rockwall, TX 75087;
and 10 children including a son Bill of
McAllen, BBA '56.
Linda Sue (Royal) Robinson, 39, BS'68
& ME '77, of 1819 Beechwood, Abilene, TX
79602, died March 4 in San Antonio. She was
a teacher in the Abilene ISD, teaching at
Locust Elementary, Taylor Elementary and
Mann Middle School. Her husband, the Rev.
Melvin L. Robinson of Abilene, is a survivor.Benjamin Lee Russell, ex '18, of P.O.
Box 998, Baird, TX 79504, died March 18 in
Abilene. He worked for Boydstun Hardward
Co. for 55 years, owning the store for the last
20 years.
Guy T. Smith, MA '41, of Brownwood,
Tex., died Jan. 30. He retired in 1970 as
superintendent of the Brownwood ISD, and
served earlier as high school principal there.
He also served as superintendent at Carbon,
Zephyr and Colony, in Eastland County.
Earlier he had served as a field scout executive
for the Comanche Trails Council of the Boy
Scouts of America.
Dana (Foy, ex '20) Switzer, 87, died Feb.
6 in Austin Tex. She taught school for more
than 30 years. Among survivors are a
daughter, grandson and three sisters, Mrs.
Frank Austin (Katie), BA '46, of 2210 S.
23, Abilene, TX 794P5, and Mrs. C.B.-4

family gave a portion of the funds for
Nix Hall, a men's residence hall at
HSU, in the early 1960's. It was
named in memory of her late father,
E.C. Nix, Sr., a former dean at
Wayland Baptist College and later
real estate and oil operator of
Lamesa, and her brother, E.C. Nix,
Jr.
Along with her husband, she was a
financial supporter of HSU for many
years and was a lifetime President's
Club member at HSU and
Southwestern Baptist Seminary, Fort
Worth. The couple established the
annual Cornerstone Series at HSU in
honor of his late parents.
She was also active in the ISU
Roundtable, an organization of wives
of faculty and administrators, and
had served as president.
Besides her husband, other sur-
vivors include a daughter, Mrs. Rosa
Lee Prichard, BS '58, of Odessa; a
son, Hilton, BA '63' of Dallas; six
grandchildren, one of whom is Lou
Ann Prichard, '83, of Odessa.
Snyder (Annie), ex '30, of 443 Callowhill,
Baird, TX 79504, and Mrs. Carl Springer,
BA '18, of 1202 Sylvan, Abilene, TX 79605.
Russell B. "Bud" Tyalor, 61, ex '48, of
Austin, Tex., died March 8. He was a former
Abilene traffic director. In 1961 he was award-
ed the American Automobile Pedestrian
Award given to him and the City of Abilene for
having the fewest pedestrian mishaps in the
state that year. Besides his wife, Jo, those sur-
viving with HSU connections are a brother,
Jim C. Taylor, ex '48, and John of Fort
Worth, ex '53, and a sister, Mrs. Glenna
Jenkins, ex '48, Abilene.
Ira (Deedle) Thompson, BA '34, retired
school administrator of 203 Glendale,
Seagoville, TX 75159, died March 20. He was
involved in football and track at HSU,
1931-34. He and his wife, the former Natalle
McClure, BA '34, celebrated their 50th an-
niversary in 1985. He was named superinten-
dent of the Seagoville schools in 1958. The
district became a part of the Dallas school
district in the early '60's and he continued as
DISD administrator until 1964.
Oliver T. Tucker, ex '46, of 314 Stafford-
shire, Irving, TX 75061, died March 17. He is
survived by his wife, Jewel Tucker.
Elizabeth Joy (Reed, BS '38) Wasson,
74, died April 18 in Odessa, Tex. She was a
teacher for 34 years. A brother, Clayton C.
Reed, ex '29, of Abilene, is among survivors.Dr. Frank L. Williams, 83, BA'29 & ME
'36, of Nacogdoches, Tex., died Feb. 15. His
wife is the former Sammie Mae Trlgg, ex
'23.
UPS Donation
Hardin-Simmons University is one
of three of 29 institutions of higher
learning that will receive $1,800
from a donation of the UPS Founda-
tion to the Texas Independent Col-
lege Fund.
A record distribution of $52,000
has been made to the TICF from the
UPS Foundation at the Independent
College Funds of America.
