Needless to say the defeat of their champion by one who was
referred to as little more than a political upstart filled the Whigs
with grief and dismay. "The annexation of Texas and the defeat
of the tariff will be the subjects that will shake our nation to its
center. And the only man who could have allayed the fearful
storm has been rejected."95 The Weekly Whig attributed the de-
feat of the Whig nominees to over-confidence, and denied that the
issue of annexation had been submitted to the people at the polls."8
On the other hand, the Ripley Advertiser expressed impatience at
the ever slow-moving Senate's disregard of the people's mandate
in regard to Texas, as expressed at the polls in November.97
Nothing, however, could quench the devotion of the Mississippi
Whigs to their defeated leader. He was still the "noblest Roman"
the country could boast of."8 The Clay club of Warren and
Lowndes Counties proposed a monument to Henry Clay in his
lifetime, as an evidence of their affection and his own imperishable
glory."9
