HIGH AGAINST THE SKY

High against the sky the gigantic Texas
star atop the San Jacinto Monument
looks out on the quiet meadow . . . the
fringe of moss-hung oaks that mark an
historic battlefield. Here swiftly a bloody
battle was fought . . . Santa Anna was
captured ... the tide was turned . . . and
the hardy settlers who loved freedom
enough to fight, even die for it, had won
for Texas its independence.
High against the Texas sky stand other
monuments which tell of another period

tanks, the refinery cat crackers, the shaft
