TEXAS COUNTY AND LOCAL HISTORY SERIES
A History of Coryell County, Texas
by ZELMA SCOTT
with a foreword by H. Bailey Carroll
Situated near the center of Texas in the blackland prairie region,
Coryell County is a predominantly agricultural area in which the
way-of-life is typical of generations of Texas rural families. Always
life in Coryell County has had its roots deep in the soil.
The author, a descendant of pioneer settlers in the area, has care-
fully documented the history of the central Texas county from the
establishment of Fort Gates to the growth of Fort Hood as the
largest armored training installation in the country.
