The Casa-Calvo-deFiniels Expedition
Nor were the Americans less bellicose. Claiborne wrote Casa-
Calvo that any attempt by the Spaniards to establish a settlement
between the Rio Grande and the Sabine in disputed territory,
particularly the military post recently planted on the Trinity
River, would result in the United States using any means neces-
sary to "break it up.""61
Later in the year while General James Wilkinson appeared in
Natchitoches at the head of the American forces, Lieutenant
Colonel Sim6n de Herrera called up Spanish forces to reinforce
the Texas frontier; but war was averted. Events in West Florida
with its sputtering revolts, the movements of Napoleon which
were ultimately to change the map of America as well as Europe,
and the lack of resolution on the part of Spanish diplomats con-
spired to confine the exploring expedition of 1805-1806 to almost-
forgotten legajos of scattered archives.
61Claiborne to Casa-Calvo, March 29, 18o6, enclosed in Casa-Calvo to Cevallos,
No. 24, confidential, April 30, i8o6, ibid., legajo 179-a; copy in Rowland, Letter
Books of Claiborne, III, 282.339
