This Viejo (old one) was a curandero, a healer, whose natural pharmacy and
skill were both talent and heritage among the Mexicans of the Texas border
country. W. D. Smithers made this photo in the 192o's, noting that even then
the curandero was becoming extinct. From Photography Collections, Hu-
manities Research Center, University of Texas at Austin.
