Affairs of the Association
for the publication of four additional books in the series during the
coming years.
The Quarterly is drawing an increasing amount of interest. The
editors tip their hats to the excellent work done by the editorial ad-
visory board and the many other scholars of the historical profession
who have read and advised us on a wide range of manuscripts sub-
mitted for consideration during the past year. To their assistance, more
than any other factor, the quality improvement of the Quarterly is
due.
Barbara Stockley and Lonn Taylor are now assisting with the jour-
nal's editorial work. Circulation, thanks largely to A. Ray Stephens'
membership committee, is over 3,ooo. We hope that all of you will
help us reach 4,ooo during the coming year.
JUNIOR HISTORIAN MOVEMENT
During the past year Ken Ragsdale, Association field representative,
has done a great deal of leg work in laying the foundation for an ex-
panded program of Junior Historian activities. It is enormously im-
portant in this difficult period of our state and national history that
we involve many more young people in the thrill and excitement of
participating in the Texas experience of the past in order to give them
a greater understanding and appreciation of their heritage. We are
looking forward to producing materials that will assist teachers and
students. We are planning to expand the scope of activities, increase
the membership, and engage a wider variety of people in this work.
The Texas Education Agency, the regional education service cen-
ters, and various other educational groups are giving strong support
to the new emphasis. It is most encouraging to see the wide range
of interest that Ken is receiving in regard to these new plans.
NATIONAL ENDOWMENT GRANT
The grant of $16,570 by the National Humanities Endowment
Foundation to sponsor the work of staff-member Jim Alvis to photo-
graph the passing scene of Texas was the first of its kind the Associa-
tion has received. The grant points out the growing attention being
paid to the activities that your Association is encouraging and under-
taking.
