When the Republic of Texas achieved statehood on February 19, 1846, Texas
became the twenty-eighth star in the Stars and Stripes of the United States. The
former national standard of the Republic of Texas-the Lone Star flag-
became the official state flag. Fifteen years later, when Texas seceded from the
Union, Old Glory was replaced by the Lone Star flag until the Confederate
States of America adopted the Stars and Bars as its national flag, which then
flew over Texas.
To observe Texas's 15oth anniversary of independence, this issue of the
Southwestern Historical Quarterly examines the land, people, and cities of Texas
from the era of Anglo-American colonization to the present. This cover is the
fourth in a series that features historic flags associated with Texas.
