Yarborough won the campaign handily against an upstart Houston Re-
publican congressman named George Bush. But President Bush got
his revenge, Yarborough recalled. He ran such a tough race that Yar-
borough fell to a member of his own party in the next race, Senator
Lloyd Bentsen.
Anyone who has been around the senator knows that he is a signifi-
cant intellect in his own right. Texana collectors are aware of his impor-
tant collection of books on Texas history and have heard him tell, on
more than one occasion, tales of his hunt for a particularly desirable
item. In addition to his career in state government, on the bench, and
in the Senate, his papers document some of his experiences with Texas
writers and intellectuals, including J. Frank Dobie, Walter Prescott
Webb, Roy Bedichek, and others, and more than one historian has
been surprised and flattered to receive a letter from the senator com-
plimenting them on their recent book-before going on, perhaps, to
raise a pertinent or curious question about some particular passage or
conclusion.
In addition to Brian Levack, Lewis Gould, Michael Hall, and Nor-
man Brown, all members of the University of Texas at Austin History
Department, dozens of the senator's friends were on hand, including
Ambassador Edward Clark, Creekmore Fath, LBJ School dean Max
Sherman, and Supreme Court judge Lloyd Doggett, and various mem-
bers of the Association staff. Author James Michener took a seat next to
the senator just before the speeches began. It was a fitting tribute to
Senator Yarborough and his wife, Opal, for their generous gift. The
scholars are, no doubt, standing in the wings now, waiting for the Bar-
ker to break the seal on one of the most significant collections of papers
to be opened to the people of Texas in some time.256
