Tom Lea, a native Texan, has travelled far and wide in a remarkable
career as a painter, writer, World War II artist-correspondent, and nov-
elist, among many other pursuits and talents. His oil painting on the
cover of this issue is based on a sketch that he made as a Lzfe magazine
war artist immediately following his participation in a United States
Marine landing, September 15, 1944, on Peleliu Island. In his book
Peleliu Landzng, published in 1945, Lea wrote: "D-morning, 15 Septem-
ber, 1944, I landed on Peleliu Island, about fifteen minutes after the
first troops hit the beach, with marines under command of Captain
Frank Farrell .... I remained with Farrell and his men under fire for
the first thirty-two hours of the assault. . . . On the beach I found it im-
possible to do any sketching or writing; my work there consisted of try-
ing to keep from getting killed and trying to memorize what I saw and
felt under fire. On the evening of D-plus-one I returned to a naval ves-
sel offshore where I could record in my sketch book the burden of this
memory." Fzrst Wave: Gozng In's somber, even grim, depiction of a
camouflage-painted soldier on a landing craft prior to the invasion cap-
tures some of the harsh realities of World War II that are described by
Texas prisoners of war in the first article in this issue.
This issue of the Southwestern Hzstorzcal Quarterly appears within a few
weeks of the fiftieth anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Har-
bor, which propelled the United States into World War II. In recogni-
tion of this major turning point in the history of our state and nation,
the Quarterly focuses on Texas and Texans in that great conflict and in
that dramatic period of history.
