Opposite page: This 37/8 X 23/-mch photograph of John Bell Hood (1831-
1879), the courageous Confederate general for whom the legendary Hood's
Texas Brigade was named, was used on a popular type of calling card com-
monly known in the 186os as a "carte de visite." Generals Stonewall Jackson
and Robert E. Lee, among others, praised the brigade's heroic fighting spirit.
At the end of the war, only some 550 out of the brigade's nearly 4,500 Texans
survived. The article on page 489 of this issue discusses how the brigade earned
its reputation for military prowess and valor.
