Opposite: Rough and Ready: "A little more grape Cap. Bragg" by Sam Chamberlain,
date unknown. Watercolor and pencil, 3 15/16 x 3 7/16 inches. Courtesy San Jac-
into Museum of History.
This painting, like the one on the front cover, is from the forthcoming TSHA
book Sam Chamberlain's Mexican War: The San Jacinto Museum of History Paintings.
Here Chamberlain portrays future president Zachary "Old Rough and Ready"
Taylor calmly telling Capt. Braxton Bragg, later a Confederate general, to load
his guns with "a little more grape." In fact, Taylor's actual words were "Well dou-
ble-shot your guns and give 'em hell, Bragg," but the story has become part of
the legend of Taylor and the great Battle of Buena Vista--a legend that helped
carry him to the White House.118
