A Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe Railway employee, c. 191o, calibrates the scale used for
weighing small express shipments on the Cane Belt branch line at Garwood, Texas. Wells
Fargo & Co. contracted with the Santa Fe for the carriage of all its Texas express, a rela-
tionship that lasted until 1918, when Wells Fargo and several other domestic competitors
such as Adams Express Company merged their operations to form the American Railway
Express agency. Wells Fargo operated on more than 5,000 miles of various different rail-
road lines in Texas for decades, and the Wells Fargo Express car (and the vault therein)
was the target of many of the train robberies in Texas between 188o and 1910. The Cane
Belt branch line of the Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe is the subject of William S. Osborn's arti-
