Cover: Courthouse, Houston, Texas, March 24th, 1852, by Thomas Flintoff.
Watercolor on paper, to x 14 inches. Courtesy Houston Metropolitan Re-
search Center, Houston Public Library, Houston.
In the year between May 1851 and May 1852, English-born artist
Thomas Flintoff visited Texas, where he painted oil portraits and water-
color landscapes, including five views of Houston made in March 1852.
This image of the first courthouse in Houston, dedicated only the year
before in October 1851, captures the somewhat raw look and feel of the
growing city. Houston in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is the
focus of this issue of the Quarterly.
