FEDERAL TAXES PAID IN TEXAS.
Total taxes paid to the United States
government during the calendar year,
1938, by the people of Texas amounted to
$145.551,279.05, according to the United States
Bureau of Internal Revenue. In the preceding
year, 1937, it was $127,113,183.77. These totals
include only the direct taxes and not indirect
levies and such items as customs duties on
imports. In 1938 there was paid in Texas a
total of $77,070,676.55 in federal income taxes,
of which $39,364,361.47 was corporation tax
and $37,706,015.08 was individual income tax.Miscellaneous internal revenue for the year
amounted to $50,593,064.21 and pay roll taxes
amounted to $17,887,538.29. Total taxes paid
in the United States during 1938 amounted to
$5,507,613,350.69, Texas paying slightly less
than 3 per cent of the total.

Total taxes paid by Texans directly to local,
state and national governments in 1938 ap-
proximated $391,387,322. The total bonded
debt of Texas people was $2,651,832,900. The
national debt is apportioned to Texas in the
same ratio as the ratio of total national popu-
lation to the Texas population. Table below
shows the taxes paid in Texas and bonded
debt of Texas people, divided according to
local, state and federal government:

STATE AD VALOREM TAX RATES.
State ad valorem tax rates for the tax year
1938-39 were 35c on the $100 valuation for the
general revenue fund, 7c for the available school
fund, and 7c for the Confederate pension fund,
making a total state ad valorem tax rate of 49c.
These rates were the same during the preceding
year, 1937-38. During the year 1936-37, the rates
for general revenue and pensions were the same
but the school rate was 20c.
