LIBRARIES. 32,
University of Texas Library at Austin and the
recently established Texas Memorial Museum
constitute the greatest depository of Texas
books, artifacts and miscellaneous historical
material in the state. The Library of the
University of Texas, housed in the magnifi-
cent new library-administration building, has
the largest collection of books in the South,
with 564,000 volumes. It is slightly larger
than the library of Duke University and con-
siderably larger than the University of North
Carolina Library, which is in third place
among southern libraries. It is the four-
teenth ranking university library in the
United States. In addition to its large col-
lection of books of general nature, the Uni-
versity of Texas Library is distinguished by
special collections, among which are the Latin.
American Collection, containing the Bexar
Archives and the Genaro Garcia Collection,
and the Texas Collection. This library has
the most extensive and complete collection
of material on Mexican history outsidePUBLIC LIBRARIES.

Smith Papers, the Henry Smith Papers,
Thomas J. Rusk Papers and other valuable
collections of the Anglo-American period. It is
also distinguished for its southern collection
and for its files of early newspapers and pe-
riodicals.
The division of archives of the State Li-
brary housed in the State Capitol Building
has the largest collection of source mate-
rial on the history of Texas in existence, in-
cluding the Nacogdoches Archives, Lamar
Papers, Reagan Papers and many other collec-
tions of early Texas history, as well as tran-
scripts and photographic records of Spanish,
French and Mexican archives.
