2The 1939 Census of Manufactures Questionnaire, for the first time, called for personnel employed
in distribution, construction, etc , separately from the manufacturing employees of the plants, and there-
fore the data are not comparable. It is not known how many of the wage earners and salaried employees
reported for 1937 were engaged in distribution, construction, or other actnities, and how many were
engaged in manufacturing Employees of the plants reported as being engaged in distribution, construc-
tion, and other activities in 1939 are not included in this preliminary report but will be included in the
final report.
JThis is an average of the numbers reported for the several months of the year In calculating it.
equal weight must be given to full-time and part-time wage earners (not reported separately by the
manufacturers), and for this reason it exceeds the number that would hase been required to perform the
work done in the industries if all wage earners had been continuously employed throughout the year The
quotient obtained by dividing the amount of wages by the average number of wage earners should not,
therefore, be accepted as representing the average wage receded by full-time wage earners. In making
comparisons between the figures for 1939 and 1937, the likelihood that the proportion of part-time
employment varied should be taken into account Also see footnote - abo\e
4Profits or losses cannot be calculated from the census figures because no data are collected for
certain expense items, such as interest, rent, depreciation, taxes, insurance, and advertising
"The totals for cost of materials and value of products include large but indeterminable amounts of
duplication due to the use of the products of some industries as material, by others This duplication
occurs. as a rule, between different industries and is not found to any great extent in individual industries.
"Calculated by subtracting the sum of cost of materials, supplies, fuel, purchased electric energy,
and cost of contract work from the % alue of products
,Where figures are not shown they are withheld to aold disclosing, exactly or approximately, data
reported by indiidual establishments, and they are included in figures for "other industries "
Manufacturing in Texas, by Counties and Cities.
Statistics below are those of the federal census of 1940. Inventory figures are for early
1940, other figures cover operations during the calendar year 1939
Note -The biennial census covers manufacturing and printing and publishing industries. Because
they account for a negligible portion of the national output, plants with annual production %alued at
less than 55,000 have been excluded since 1919No Wage
