Tractors on Texas Farms, by Counties, 1944
There were 195,056 tractors on Texas farms in 1944, according to a report of the United
States Agricultural Adjustment Administration. There were 98,923, according to the census
of 1940; 37,348 by the census of 1930, 16,780 by the census of 1925 and 9,048 by the census of
1920. This rapid mechanization has been accompanied by a decline in number of tenants and
number of farms, and an increase in the average acreage of the Texas farm. The use of the
tractor is widespread in the state, though there has been less development of power farming
in the East Texas forest area than elsewhere. The increase in use of the tractor has been
accompanied by an expansion of mechanized farming methods in land breaking, cultivation
and harvest. The diversion of approximately half of the former cotton acreage to grain and
other crops, many of which are more suitable to mechanized farming, has speeded the
development. Mechanized farming has had its greatest development on the High Plains of
Northwest Texas. Below is the report, by counties, on number of tractors on farms in 1944,
