ODESSA METEOR CRATER
The second largest meteor crater in the
United States is ten miles southwest of
Odessa, Ector County. Texas (The largest
meteor crater is in Arizona ) The crater near
Odessa is approximately 600 feet in diameter.
Lack of evidence of any ordinary reason for
a depression at this point led scientists to
believe it had been made by the impact of a
large meteor on the surface of the earth
After preliminary surveys by the Bureau of
Economic Geology at the University of Texas,
a joint project of the bureau and the Federal
Work Projects Administration located the
main body of the meteor 164 feet beneath the
surface of the earth. It is of iron. and many
fragments of meteoric iron have been picked
up in that Nicinity
Meteorites Found in Texas.
Many meteorites, both stone and metallic,
have been picked up from the broad surface
of Texas There was interest in them at an
early date. Some of the Indian tribes, nota-
bly the Comanches, attributed magical healing
powers to these pieces of metal and stone,
being intrigued by their very great weight.
The "Red River" or "Texas" meteorite, which'
was found in the early part of the nineteenth
century, weighs 1 653 pounds A meteorite
found in the Davis Mountains weighs 1,520
pounds. A large number of smaller meteor-
ites, most of them weighing only a few
pounds, have been picked up Principal ex-
hibit of these is at the Texas Memorial Mu-
seum at the University of Texas, Austin, of
which Dr. E H Sellards is director.
