Excellent fishing and hunting.

Mertzon (869), county seat, located near head
springs of Spring Creek, is main retail and ship-
ping point and depends on liestock and irrigated
farms along Spring Creek Wool warehouses halve
capacity of 5,000,000 lbs Has good schools, lise-
stock show in spring Sherwood, former county
seat, is twin city of Mertzon Barnhart is ship-
ping point inm western part.

Half level, half rolling and hilly county of Cen-
tral North Texas, lying partly on open Grand
Prairie and partly min West Cross Timbers West
Fork of Trinity River crosses from northwest to
southeast. Created from Cooke County 1856,
organized 1857 Named for William H and Pat-
rick C. Jack, early Texas heroes who fought
against Mexico Alt 1,100-1,900 ft , ann rainfall

Resources. Soils are sandy, sandy loam, gray
loam, valleys black sandy, subsoils red and yellow
clay Post oak, blackjack, mesquite, live oak.,

of coal, clay for brick
Crops Oats, wheat, corn, grain sorghums,
peanuts and some cotton for market Estimated

Livestock Main industry, with beef cattle,
goats, sheep, chickens, turkeys, hogs produced
Jack has been noted for its Polled Herefords
Dairying is large and increasing industry. Esti-
mated 455,000 acres of ranch land
Excellent hunting Lake Bridgeport extends
into eastern part Fort Richardson, established
as frontier defense against Indians, is near Jacks-
boro, repair and restoration were completed in
