which fatalities occurred and the 2,059 deaths
were distributed as follows: In cities. 413
fatality accidents and 436 deaths: in towns.

records in 1948 and was not much lower on
basis of the first eight months of 1949. there
has been marked improvement on basis of
ehicle-miles driven in the state. in 1935 total
Sehlcle-miles were 11.235,278.043 and deaths
1.864. or 16.6 deaths for each 100.000,000
lehicle-miles. This ratio has been gradually
reduced until it was only 8.3 deaths for each
100.000.000 vehicle-miles in 1948, that is. 2.059
deaths in 24,863.489,988 vehicle-miles.
BIRTHS, DEATHS-MARRIAGES
There were 195.529 births reported in Texas
during 1948 and 106,251 during the first seven
months of 1949, according to the Public
Health Service of the Federal Security
Agency. Births during the first seven months
of 1949 were 1.03 per cent abo~e births of the
corresponding period of 1948.
Deaths in Texas during 1948 totaled 64.459.
They totaled 38.157 during the first seven
months of 1949, as against 38.261 in the same
period of 1948. Infant deaths in Texas in 1948
totaled 9,114 and 5,247 during the first seven
months of 1949.
Marriage licenses issued in Texas during
1948 totaled 112.898 and 49.538 during the

During the fiscal year ended June 30, 1949.
the Federal Government 'collected a total of
$1.381,165.565.49 of internal revenue in Texas.
Of this amount. $756.967.557.53 was collected
in the First Internal Revenue District (South
Texas with headquarters at Austin) and
$624.198.007.96 was collected from the Second
District (North Texas with headquarters at
Dallas).
Individual income taxes, including taxes
withheld by employers, amounted to $755.-
085.619.42: corporation income and profits
taxes amounted to $382.649.334.25: employ-
ment taxes totaled $81,208,982.17, and the re-
maining $162.221.629.65 was derived from mis-
cellaneous internal revenue.
In the preceding fiscal year, ended June
30. 1948. total internal revenue collections
from Texas amounted to $1,285,123,045.12.
PUBLIC OFFICIAL PENSION SYSTEMS
Several pension systems for public officials
and employees have been set up by the Legis-
lature in recent years. The teachers retire-
ment system was set up in 1937. (See p. 360
for membership of board and p. 610 for
statement of fund.) In 1947 retirement sys-
tems were set up for state employees and
certain classes of municipal employees. (See
p. 360 for membership of the two boards and
p. 610 for statement of fund of state employ-
ees.) The Fifty-first Legislature, 1949, set up
a system of pensions for the state judiciary
(district and all appellate judges) and made
the Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court
the administrator of the law. (HB 33.) The
Fifty-first Legislature, 1949. submitted an
amendment., subject to election, Nov. 8, 1949,
making permissive pension systems for county
