POT UL'.A 'ION---GRUMV TH-S rATISTICS.

of its agricultural and mineral resources-
cotton, livestock, wheat, rice. oil and gas
There are still potentialities for increased
population on the basis of expanded agricul-
tural industries. While there is nc new land
to be brought into use. a much greater agrl.
cultural population can be sustained by the
more intensive methods of cropping and live-
stock raising than have been developed in
recent years. The possibilities of greater
population support through development of
future mineral resources are unknown, of
course.
But the future growth of Texas population
must depend primarily upon industrial ex-
pansion. And, if the last few years' develop-
ment constitutes an indication for the future.
the future growth of population will be large.
Between the census of 1939 and that of 1947.
total value added by manufacture of products
increased from $453,105,423 to $1,716,000,000.
This is an increase of more than 200 per cent
even after allowance is made for inflated
values in 1947. The number of wage earners
in Texas manufacturing industries during the
period Increased from 126,996 to 242,000
While hhere will always be large areas of
Texas that are relatively thinly populated, yet
the evident abundance of its natural re-
sources, its excellent geographic situation
with respect to the Atlantic ana Pacific sea-
boards, and also with respect to the world
lanes of commerce, should guarantee it a sub-
stantial future growth. It should easily reach
what was in 1948 the average density of popu-
lation of the United States. When and if it
does, Texas' population will be approximately
11,700,000.

CENTER OF AREA, TEXAS AND U. S.
Center of area of Texas is a point about
twenty miles northeast of Brady, McCulloch
County, according to the United States Bu-
reau of the Census. Center of area of the
United States is ten miles north of Smith
Center, Smith Co., Kan.
CENTER POPULATION, TEXAS AND U. S.
Center of gravity of population of Texas
has not been calculated by the Bureau of the
Census since 1920 when it was in southwest-
ern MeLennan County 12.1 miles southwest of
Waco and 6 miles east-northeast of McGregor.
It is not far from that location today, be-
cause, while there has been expansion of the
general population of West Texas, it has been
offset by the growth of cities in the eastern..,
part of the state. Probably the location would
be a short distance south of the 1920 point.
There has been a more rapid growth in South-
ern than in Northern Texas since 1920.
Center of gravity of population of the
United States was calculated in 1940 as being
2 miles southeast by east of Carlisle, Sullivan
County, Ind.
