KINGSTON.
A FLOURISHING CITY IN A
PROSPEROUS COUNTRY.
Colleges Schools and Churches-Business
Houses and Business- Men.
THE DARLING DAUGUTEK OF THE PRAI-
KIE" THE "POEM OF OLD HUNT."
Kingston is one of Hunt county's
most noted towns. Its beginning
was with a rnsh its progress was
characterised by its impetuous
leaps and its presont substantial
being and commercial prosperity
are tho fruits of energy enterprise
intelligent conceptions and prompt
and careful executions. It is a
city of promises and fulfillments
and tho work is still in its infancy.
Its past is wonderful its present
magnificent and its futuro is full
of glorious possibilities.
Kingston is an offspring of tho
era of railroads in Hunt county. It
is situated on tho Missouri Pacific
nino miles north of Greenville It
is sometimes called the "Darling
Daughter of tho Prairie" being
surrounded by a beautiful prairie
country looming lowering and
rolling like the waves of a tran-
quil sea. Tho soil is adapted to
tho raising of corn wheat oats
cotton and vegetables and fruits
of all kinds. Tho farms aro gen-
erally small and owned by intelli-
gent industrious and public spirit-
ed citizens. It is a community of
churches schools and public en-
terprises. Kingston now stands where Ceres
with her sheaves stood in 1880.
Tho sweet dreams of that goddess
of corn and tillngoJwas disturbed
by tu"o"confu3lKn of tho coming
cars and soon gave way to tho
builders of towns. Tho land was
owned by Messrs. S. T. Culver and
B. Nick Hodges. Tho Missouri
Pacific favored tho placo with a
depot and placed Mr. S.R. Smith
in charge. Tho first to build ajid
commenco business were P. C Cul-
ver and M. K. Harrol general
merchants ; Henry Swift and J. TV.
Patterson dry goods j L. J. Brown
restaurant ; C H. Roberts saloon ;
J. R. Shiolds grocorics; D. E. Bol
tin hotel ; J. P. Harris drugs and
medicines ; P. A. Stcdmau family
groceries; H. E. Monroe newspa-
per 'Tho Kingston Beacon' ; T. R.
Tatum blacksmith and J. K.
Knight wood-shop.
For a timo tho placo was vocal
with tho confusion and bustlo that
characterizes all now and rapidly
growing railroad towns. It had
its full season of irregularities
and the wild and wooly clement
wero left unfettered until tho fall of
1883 when incorporation becamo
necessary. Tho 2rst officers of tbo
placo wero as follows : Mayor J. R.
Knight ; Marshal "W. R. Rnssoll ;
alderman J. R. Clommons B.N.
Kodccs. N. J. Green J. J. Guest
and T. J. Poster. At that timo tho
placo was a mero villaRO but a
thrifty one and has steadily grown
in bnsincss and population and to
day it has a population of 650 and
all branches of business and indus-
try fully represented. The mer-
chants aro all of tho progressive
enterprising energetic stamp
gonuino builders of cities and
their liberality is amply reflected
in their several church edifices
school buildings and tho famous
Galhoun College.
In tho matter of educational fa-
cilities Kingston is regarded as
tho
ATHEXS Or HUM COUNTY.
At an early period in tho history
of Kingston Prof. J. R. Clemmons
assisted by Prof. Hugh Todd es-
tablished tho Kingston High
School. Prom tho beginning it en'
joyed a roputation as an institu
tion of learning second to nono in
North Texas. Thoy orected their
own building on their own lot. In
1S85 thoy sold their school district.
Tho scholastic population having
greatly increased tho enlargement
of tho building was necessary in
order to accommodato between
three and four hundred pupils.
The surroundings wero so flat
tering for tho establishment of a
good school of a high grade tho
trnstees Messrs. T.J. Foster S. T.
Culver and T. A. Roach sought
for teachers to meet tho demands
and wero fortunate to tho extent
of securing such eminent educators
as Prof. T. S. Sligh Mrs. Slich.
Prof. T.E. Wallis and Miss. Lizzie
Calhoun whoso reputation as
teachers is co-extensive with tbo i
school system of this stato and
Louisiana.
Having one of tho largest most
imposing and best arranged build-
ings in the stalo a superior faculty
and all things else requisite the
board of trustees conccivod tho
idea of applying tho cap-sheaf to
tho institution by having it char-
tered. A charter was obtained and
tho institution christiaued Calhoun
College tho event having been
celebrated last June.
It commenced its first session on
thoCthdayof Soptombcr. ultimo
with prospects that bid fair to
make Kingston one of the most
famous educational points in the
state. Aside from tho pupils from
abroad tho scholastic roll num-
bers two hundred.
Tho town and surrounding coun-
try novor fails to impress visitors
with the idea that thoy aro in a
growing" intelligent and cntorpris-
ing country whoso aim is onward
and upward.
KINGSTON SHIPMENTS.
Last yoar Kingston shipped
about 1200 bales of cotton about
thirty car loads of grain soventy-
fivo car loads of cotton seed and
upward of thirty-fivo car loads of
stock. It is impossible to give tbe
exact figures in Ibis regard as wo
havo not the data at command.
A history of Kingston in detail
would require much time research
and space. Tho town is a growing
wonder and ihe country is ono
vast region of endless resources.
Tho people a splendid citizenship
aro anxious to sharo their bounty
with those seeking homes in -Hunt
county and offer overy inducement.
Tho capitalist can find fruitful
fields for tho omployrnnt of capi-
tal ; thore is room for other mcr-
clinnts; thorois -room for- skilled
workmen in all branches of indus-
try and thoso'scekinghcalthichcap
lands gpcu schools churches etc.
Kingsion invites you to como and
cast j our lot in their town and
country. All will receive a cor-
dial wolcome.
BUSINESS OF KINGSTON.
A feeling of confidences in tho
futuro stability of Kingston as
a business center is fully establish-
ed in the minds of tho pooplc and
the opening of tho present trado
season found tho morchants pre-
pared and determined to accommo-
datoall tho trado that comes to
their doors. As a cotton market
Kingston is a recognized rival in
tho county and in this lino she
proposes to not only sustain her
roputation but to cnlargo it during
tho season by paying tho highest
E rices lor ovory balo unloaded in
er mart.
In tho general mcrcantilo lino

parison of goods and prices with

THE LUMBER INTEREST.
Kingston without a lumber
yard would bo a partial failuro;
at least it would bo humiliating
for tho spirited builders to bo com-
pelled to send elsowhoro for lum-

interest is fully represented by
Mr. R. C Phanstcel who carries a

as yet its ambition being of the
sort that seeks too much to

did peoplo of that place. It is
quito crcditablo in sizo and ap-

its follies and foibles and join in
tho work of building up the goncr-
al interests of its town and section.
