In DIA Contests
Dr. Pitirim Alexandrovitch Soroldn and his wife, Mrs. Helen P.
Sorokin, both of Harvard University, will be visiting professors at
Howard Payne College next spring, announced Dr. A. Donald Bell,
executive vice president.
Coming in support of the Comprehensive Curriculum to be initi-
ated next fall, Dr. Sorokin will be teaching in the Departments of
Philosophy and Sociology.
Mrs. Sorokin, who is also a Ph.D., will be the guest of the Di-
vision of Science, teaching Bofany and' other sciences.
Dr. Bell explained that the
teaching program will he- set up
on three different levels which
will enable all students to gain
from the visiting professors the
degree of knowledge they desire.
On the first level, the regular,
catalogue course in philosophy,
sociology or botany will be begun
by the person now teaching in tlie
department. When the Sorbins
arrive they will continue the course
until their departure, at which
time the regular professor will
again resume teaching the course,
reviewing the material presented
by Dr. and Mrs. Sorokin.
The second level will consist of
small group seminars and discus-
sions led by the Sorokins for ma-
jors in the departments concerned
and for those particularly inter-
ested in participating.
Credit on this second level will
depend upon various factors not
yet available.
On the third level, all students
will have the opportunity to hear
the Sorokins through a series of
chapel and /or afternoon lectures.
Said Dr. Bell, "These lectures
will be non-credit, but will give
all Howard Payne students the
privilege of studying under these
outstanding people."
Thus he said, beginning with
next fall's freshmen, every Howard
Payne graduate will have studied
under at least four internationally-
known people.
More than $400 in prizes will be
offered in this spring's student E^e-
mocracy-In-Action contests, an-
nounced the DIA faculty committee
early this week.
Two significant measures were
taken by the committee concern-
ing the contests to enable more
students to participate than in
previous years. „

The first of these was to extendi
the range of the contest to cover
10 different areas. With two, andl
in some cases, three prizes given,
in each area, upwards to 23 cash,
prizes will be available.
The second measure adapted
specified that a student may submit
as many entries in as many phases
of the contest as he desires, but
will be eligible for only one cash
prize.
Thus, providing each phase of the
contest attracts entries, approxi-
mately 23 students will receive
cash prizes ranging upward to $35.
The committee also recommended
the granting of an outstanding en-
try award of $50 to be given for
the one entry that is judged su-
perior to all others in the contest.
The following contests are open
to all students at Howard Payne.
The figures in parenthesis indicate
the cash amount of first second,
and in some cases, third prizes.
