The Howard Payne track
tetam will be in San Marcos
Saturday minus its leading
point producer, distance great
Junior Lee.
The meet there will mark
the last outing of the season
before coach David Noble and
the Jacket cindermen go to the
big one, the Lone Star Con-
ference track and field meet
April 23 and 24 in San Angelo.
For Lee, who won three
events setting meet records in
two, > the Southwest Texas
State outing will provide a
well-deserved rest before the
LSC match.
"After Lee's fine showing
during HP's invitational last
weekend," Noble explained, "I
just felt like he needed a rest
before the conference meet."
If falling track records had
been raindrops, there would,
have been a deluge here Sat-
urday at the Howard Payne
invitational track and field
meet.
Unfortunately, however, that
was not the case. So track
fans who turned out to root
and toot at the annual meet
had to settle for seeing five
new meet marks fall instead
of a much-needed rain.
In a meet ih which Howard
Payne successfully defended
its championship, new stand-
ards were established in the
long jump, mile run, discus,
3-mile run and the triple
jump.
One meet mark was tied in
the pole vault when Rickey
Parris of McMUrry equalled
the standing record of 16-0
to win first place in that
event, Parris set the current
mark in the HPC invitational
last year.
Southwest Texas State fin-
ished second behind Howard
Payne's pace - setting point
production of 69. The Bob-
cats came in with 54.
JUNIOR LEE
... 2 new records
The rest of the teams and
f how they finished included
Sul'ftoss 49; Angelo State 35;
Sam Houston State 34; Mc-
Murry 19; East Texas* State ,
15; Southeastern of Durant,
Okla., 8, and Tarleton State
1. Trinity and St. Edward
failed to get any points.
"We were lucky indeed to
win the meet," said HPC
track coach David N$ble.
"Wh&t really helped, us was
getting some points in several
events that we hadn't figured
on." ,
One of the events that
Noble and the Yellow Jackets
had counted on was the mile
run.
-In that event,* Junior Lee
of Cross Plains, who finished
the day as the meet's only
triple winner, set a new stand-
ard with a first-place time of
4:08.3.
Lee's clocking eclipsed an
old record of 4:12.0—a time
which Lee turned in - last
year. -
Lee also finished first in
the 880-yard run (1:54.5) and
in the 3-mile run (14:25). The

The Yellow Jacket football
squad resumed spring work-
outs Thursday, beginning the
final two weeks of the pre-
season training.
Actually, workout resumed
Wednesday but in shorts only.
The session was aimed at
working out kinks and wrin-
kles which may have cropped
up over the extended Easier
vacation. ■
"We plan to make these last
two weeks of workouts the
most beneficial since I've been,
associated with Howard Payne
football," head coach and'ath-
letic director James Cameron,
commented.
The remaining few days of
spring training drills will be
focused on everything from
football fundamentals to fi-
nese and timing—much of
which will be designed to pre-
pare the Jackets for their an-
nual intra-sqtiad spring game
scheduled here May 1 in asso-
ciation with Parents' Weekend.
The game will close out the
spring drills for the Jackets.
"With the addition of a!
couple of playerssand the ma-
turation of a few others,'"
Cameron said, "I feel like the
Jackets are, going to hav^ a
better chance of developing
more of a surprise element
, than they showed last season.
I am pretty certain right now
that we are going to be much1
more of a wide-open and pass-*
ing team than we were be-!
fore."
To help obviate turnovers—
especially the fumble kind
which occasionally hurt the'
1970 Jackets in several srucial
^moments—Cameron and aids
Dean Slayton and Wayne
Rathke have been putting the
players through special drills.
"The whole staff has done
much'soul-searching regarding
this jnatter," Cameron remark-;
ed, "and we feel like we'.haye^
been doing sbm'e things to help
alleviate the problems."
senior's time in the 3-mile
represented a meet record'be-
cause it was the first time
; the event had ever be?n run
at the HPC invitational.
Another event used for the
first time was the triple
jump, where Angelo State's
amazing African, Josh OwU-
su, set a meet mark withi
a leap of 51-0%.
OwusU also set a first place
for the Rams in the long jump!
with an effort of 5-5%. This
This too was a meet record
—the old one being a 24-8 Ms
established by Fred Fox of
McMurry in 1969. 1 ,
Eric Hardaway of Sul Ross,,
who was a double winner,
set a meet mark in the dis-.
cus with a toss of 170-7%.
The old standard was a 170-
6% set by Wayne Rathke oil
Howard Payne two years, ago.
