A HISTORY OF TYLER AND SMITH COUNTY, TEXAS
"Survey of the Boundary Lines of Smith County."
fORTH and West Boundary Lines.
On May 29th, 1847, Thomas J. Hays was appointed by the
Commissioners Court to survey the North boundary line of
Smith County, and reappointed on August 3, 1847 to survey the
West boundary. Said survey was to begin at the Northwest cor-
ner of Rusk County on the Sabine River and run up the Sabine
River thirty-six miles on a straight line and to establish a cor-
ner by extending thence south to the Cherokee County line.s
Hays was selected also to make the necessary calculations to
determine the center of the county. The survey to determine
the North and West boundary lines was started August 16th,
1847.6
South Boundary Line.
The South boundary line of Smith County (which is also
the North boundary line of Cherokee County) was surveyed by
Absalom Gibson, October 30 to November 2, 1846.7
East Boundary Line.
The East boundary line of Smith County was provided for
when Smith County was geographically created, when the East
boundary line of Smith County formed the western boundary
line of Rusk County.
The writer has not been able to ascertain whether Smith
County has ever employed anyone especially to run or confirm
the East boundary line of, Smith County.
The Date When Tyler Was Incorporated.
SAMMEL'S "Laws of Texas" (Special Laws of
the Third Legislature, Volume 3, page 60) gives this data, as
follows:
"An Act to Incorporate the town of Tyler in Smith Coun-
ty": Section I - "Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State
of Texas, that the citizens of the town of Tyler, in Smith Coun-
ty be and they are hereby declared a body politic and corpor-
ate under the name and style of the corporation of the town
of Tyler and by that name shall have power to sue and be sued,
