A HISTORY OF TYLER AND SMITH COUNTY, TEXAS
ber 6, 1851, and one item in it reads as follows:32 "The cor-
ner-stone of the Courthouse (the first brick Courthouse-W)
will be laid on next Saturday the 13th of December by the
Masonic Fraternity according to the ancient usages of that ven-
erable order."
Smith County's first jail was probably built in the latter
part of 1847 at a point on the south side of East Ferguson
Street one block east of the square and a few feet east of the
Missouri Railway track. It was later replaced by a two-story
jail, built of brick which was torn down and another jail (two-
story brick) was built on the south side of East Erwin Street a
few feet east of the Missouri Pacific Railway track. In later
years a jail was built on South Spring Avenue, where it now
stands.
Population of Tyler in 1851.
.N 1851 the entire population of Tyler liv-
ing within one mile of the Courthouse was listed as 276 persons.
On this list, including women and children, 174 were males and
102 females. The record is that four children attended school in
Tyler in 1850. The total valuation of real estate, and other
property owned by the entire population in Tyler in the year
1850 was $14,750.33

CITY Court, Frank L. McClendon, Esq., pre-
siding - Meets each week-day at 9:00 A. M.
County Court - Meets in Tyler each week-day, Judge R. P.
Power presiding.
County Commissioners Court (Consisting of 4 commissioners,
together with the County Judge) - Meets in Tyler each week-day,
Judge R. P. Power presiding.
District Court of 7th Judicial District meets in Tyler in March,
June and November, Judge Otis T. Dunagan presiding.
Special District Court of Smith and Wood Counties, Judge
Nat. W. Brooks presiding meets each week-day in one of these
counties.
