New memorial scholarship given
The late Ellc G. Sanders, a
former superintendent of the
Canadian schools and himself
an early graduate of the
system, has been memorializ-
ed By a new scholarship given
by the family of Elic G.
Sander*.
A brand new $300 scholar-
ship, which will be made
annually at Canadian high
school commencements after
this year, was announced
Saturday morning...too late to
be included in the scholarship
awards announced at gradua
tion ceremonies Friday night.
It is the Elic G. Sanders
memorial scholarship, present-
ed by the Sanders family in
memory of a former Canadian
high school graduate and
one-time superintendent of the
Canadian schools.
Establishment of the schol-
arship was announced Saturday
morning by Larry and Natalie
Sanders, along with the
announcement that the first
recipient of the award is Miles
Rhea, valedictorian of the Class
of 1976.
The scholarship is to be
presented each year to the class
valedictorian, Mrs. Sanders
said. This award is not to be
made on the basis of economic
need, but solely for academic-
excellence and scholarship
achievement.
Elic G. Sanders was, himself,
a graduate of Canadian hiijh
school. Class of 1915, and was
Superintendent of the Canadian
schools from 1926 1928. The
veteran school man died at
Amarillo a few months ago.
His son, Larry Sanders, is
principal of Canadian hi^h
school, and his daughter in law,
Natalie Sanders, is a popular
CHS teacher.
"We are establishing this
award in Mr. Sanders memory
because of his own high regard
for academic excellence," Nata-
lie Sanders announced for the
family "and because we think it
would please him to have an
award in his name to the
graduating student each year
who has achieved the greatest
academic excellence...the vale
dictorian of the class."
