For Mike
Lydia L. Pyburn
Summer's last light shines through a stained glass
bird
to the hidden place where a glass fills with Kool-
Aid,
where her lips touched the cold sweetness of his.
The cool sweat of his shirt clings to her torso,
leaving an impression of himself.
Her hand against the boyish stubble,
the dirt smudging her fingers,
is lost in the shadows of his face
yet he finds her palm with a kiss.
Their eyes linger on their shared past,
close enough to love but separated by friendship.
He nearly drove off the road once,
just looking at her sleeping from the rear view mir-
ror.
She fell for him the day his slouched over body sat
on her couch,
and his brooding eyes looked up at her.
A moment of weakness turned to strength,
Her heart could open to him now.
In that twilight of the kitchen,
they secretly embrace each others needs,
Escaping,
the light of the television,
the tyranny of their mothers.44
