THE GALLEON
Elementary School Daze
Tracy M. Gand
Elementary school days...
Walking in our neighborhood
idle stoned men, drinking and smoking,
clustered in doorways scattered down the sidewalks
they were so close, they could reach out and touch
you as you passed by
but my sister and I were tough
not to be reckoned with
taught to be self-reliant, to stand tall and walk fast
as if someone were expecting us any moment
And as far as I can recall
it worked
only our fear touched us
I remember the keen awareness
watching my surroundings
eyeing everyone
suspecting everyone of evil
I had no innocence
only wisdom
wisdom gained through experience
I knew what they could do to me
it was nothing new
but out here we were safer than at home
out here we could move fast and walk tall
we had somewhere to go
at home we had
nowhere to go76
