found a 'mass' in her lung. That was it. No expla-
nation, no theories. Just tests and 'we will get back
to you.' My Nana was scared. Papa was scared too,
but he did not show it. They were scared because
no one would tell them what was going on. Nana
was asking me questions that I could not answer. I
wondered where my dad was an why he was not
going to the doctor as well. Each time Nana called
it was a little worse.
The mass was a tumor.
The tumor was malignant.
The tumor was spreading.
Surgery was not possible.
Chemotherapy was the last option.
When I flew in to visit in November, Nana
was in the hospital. The cancer was spreading to
other parts of her body. She needed to start chemo-
therapy as soon as possible."
I pulled my hands out of my pockets and
began to pick at the roses, pulling the dead petals
off. My mom said that a plant cannot tell when a
part of it is dead, so it keeps sending food and nu-
trients to the "ill" parts of the plant until it eventu-
ally kills itself, trying to cure itself. Chemotherapy
ahs the same effect on the body.
"I got very angry at my dad because he was
not keeping me updated with what was happening.
I felt very guilty when I went to see Nana in the
hospital because I have not been there as much as
my cousins. Nana wasn't able to get out of the hos-
pital for Kari's wedding. My cousin was heartbro-
ken. I almost felt jealous because Kari had such a
bond with Nan and Nana wanted to be there so
badly. I wasn't sure if it would have been the same
had I been the one getting married...not to the84
