THE GALLEON
I share with Nana is through secondhand stories.
And now I have to write this eulogy from all the
grandchildren. What am I going to say? They all
have a bond and I don't. I wasn't there, I was never
there."
My mom let me sob into her shoulder in
the grass next to the Roses and the Plumbago. After
awhile I let go and she leaned back.. She took my
face in her hands.
"You do have a bond with her. You were
that special grandchild that she only got to see
every once in awhile. That mad your time together
even more meaningful and it was never taken for
granted. You share a bond of wisdom. You both
know the importance of time and the importance of
each other. This bond was not shared with anyone
else, because everyone else lived there."
I looked around the yard. My eyes circled
the yard; the Skyflower bush by the front door, the
Periwinkles, the Crysanthemums, and the Hibiscus.
My eyes stopped. The Hibiscus- like in Nana's
yard. We used to go outside and made shapes out
of the clouds while sitting next to the Hibiscus. We
were always inventing silly games next to the Hi-
biscus bed. I guess I do have a bond. I like to call it
my "do-not-take-it-for-granted-bond." That is
something Nana and I never did.87
