Meeting of May 14, 1999
Old Settlers trustees gathered at noon, at Kelly Square in downtown Sherman,
for their annual spring meeting. Present were: R. C. Vaughan, Bill Collins, Mike Allen,
Charles Britt, Ray Stephens John Biggerstaff, Robert Hynds, Clyde Hall, and Joe
Wolfe. President Wolfe reported that Bill Wilcox would be unable to attend and that
Joe Washbumn, due to serious illness, likewise would be unable to attend.
Following lunch, as the first item of business, minutes of the previous meeting
(October 22, 1998) were approved (Hynds/Allen).
President Wolfe read appreciative notes received from recipients of grants made
by the association in 1998.
Year-end (December 31, 1998) financial statements were approved
(Collins/Vaughan). Included with the year-end statements were estimates of 1999
expenses and income, the latter reflecting increased revenues resulting from the sale of
Old Settlers Park.
Given the increase in estimated income, attention was then focused on possible
grants, aggregating $14,500, for 1999. Guidelines agreed upon included the following:
the association should continue to distribute virtually all of its annual income remaining
after providing for operating expenses; all 1998 grant recipients should be included in
1999 grants to aggregate $12,000; for 1999 the remaining $2,500 should constitute a
"one-time only" grant. Given these guidelines, the following 1999 grants were approved
(Stephens/Collins):
Grayson County College
Judge J. N. Dickson Fellowship in History $1200.
History Scholarship 800.
Austin College
Peter W Grayson Fellowship in History 4000.
Town Libraries
(Howe, Pottsboro, Van Alstyne
Whitesboro, Whitewright, @400 each) 2000.
