United Fund Enters 2nd Week
The United Fund drive got off
to healthy start on the Tarleton
State College Campus, Dr. Wil-
liam F, Hill, chairman, reported
today.
Dr. Hill said that the United
Fund committee is grateful-for the
cooperation shown and it is especi-
ally eager to get the campaign
over with as soon as possible.
. "Realizing that the end of
Septemebr is a. bad time to ap-
proach-teachers for donations, we.
havo arranged for the facutly and
staff at. Tarleton to. make their
donations in the form of pledge
cards. These can be made at the
business office- and the donation"
can then be paid out over the
year or.whenever convenient," Dr.
Hill said. " •
The Tarleton Dining Hall staff
was one'of the first to make its
donation and reach, a 100 per cent
contribution.

The goal for the -1959 campaign-
has been placed at $1;35Q, Of the-
: total amount received, 43 per cent
will go to the Steplienville United
-Fund, five per cent to the Tarleton
Contingency Fund, 40 pet- cent to
the Tarleton High School Rela-
tions Committee and 10 per cent

Choir Enrollment Soars
To 87,
Debate Club
Receives Charter
A ,1959-1960 charter for the
TSC Debate Club, has been ac-
cepted by the dean of the college,
Paul A. Cunyus, it was announced
-recently. .
The newly chartered organiza-
tion will hold its first meeting to-
night at G:30 p.m. in Room 125 of
the sciences building. Details of or-
ganization and requirements for
membership will be discussed at
that time,' ' . ■ ■
- Dr. O. A.. Grant, head of the
siicial science department and
sponsor for the-debate club, says,
he "highly recommends that pre-
law, speech and business majors
look into the - advantages of de-;
bating experience. Dr. Grant has,
said that the first public debate:
will probably be on the subject of
capital punishment.

The TSC Choir, with an all-time
high membership, presented its
first program last Friday at an
assembly held in the main aud-
itorium.
Director Francis Woodward re-
vealed that the choir this year has
more than doubled its member-
ship over that of two years, past.
In 19-57, the choir had a strength
of only 35 voices, while in 1958,
the membership totaled 63. Di*.
Morton, division director of fine
arts, said, "It's the largest choir
Tarleton has ever had."
In last Friday's. ' program,' the
unprecedented 83 voices of the or-
ganization led the students in the
Color Song and Fight Song, and
presented two Fred Waring ar-
rangements, "No Man Is an
Island" and "Dry. Bones."
The soprano section is composed
of Sherry. Allen, Judy Barham,
Gloria Gates, Judy Cato, Maty Cox,
Margaret Ann Dean, Carole Don-
aldson, Kay Donaldson, Sharon
Dowell, Charlotte. Gray, Charlene
Gerhart, Linda Harris, Jean Hen-
drix, Jo Merrill Holt, La Nell
Jones and Holly Kinser,

At Tarleton
Completed
Final enrollment figtires on the
twelfth class day report reached
1,013, Registrar Stuart; Chilton re-
vealed this week. The jinal enroll-
ment showed a drop from the final
tally in 1958, however,j significant
increases have been made in var- .
ious departments at taj-leton Stata
Chilton said. \
Coed enrollment showed an in-
crease, especially in the sophomore
eiass. Total enrollment for women
reached 233. The total last year
was 220. ,
In the freshman class, 567 men
and 147 women are enrolled for a
total of 714.
In the sophomore class, 205
men and 65 women bring the total
to 270.
There axe 29 special students!

Twenty foreign students from
nine countries are. enrolled at Tar-
leton this fall. The foreign student
enrollment showed a decrease
from.last year when, an, all-time
record was reached. : j ,;.
Veteran student enrollment
reached 24 this fall. Also, eight
veteran's dependents were enrolled
in classes.
Officials expect the veteran re-
gistrations to decrease as the num-
ber of men eligible for GI bene-
fits decreases. The law until rei

War II and the Korean War.
Band Asked to
Play at Iredell
TSC Band Director.' Hilmai*
Wagner said last, week that the
TSC marching band has 1 been
asked to play for the Iredell home-
coming football game which, will
be held in Iredell Saturdays Octo-
ber 31. " 1
With a football squad of only
eight members, the small gchool
has . no high school band.. Dr.
Vance Terrell of Stephenville, a
former Iredell . resident, has ' of-
fered to charter a private bus for
the band's transportation there
and back. The. band will also ba
given a barbecue. Terrell said.
ROTC Company
Sponsors Chosen
Seven TSC coeds were chosen
company sponsors by the seven re-
spective companies of the Corps
of Cadets. last Thursday during
drill. Each of the - companies
elected a sponsor by a show of
hands. ...
Those elected were Elizabeth
Brown, sponsor of the cadet staff;.
Sally Moore, band company spon-
sor; Jeannie Albright, "A" Com-
pany sponsor; Sharon Dowell,
sponsor of Company "B;" Mario
Swafford, sponsor of Company
"G;" Ann Hudson, Company' "D"
sponsor, and Marcia Morrison,
Company . "E" sponsor.
The formal commissioning cere-
monies for the ROTC sponsors will
be held October 8, during the half-,
time of the Kilgore-Tarleton foot-
ball game; They will be presented
"by President Howell; Oil hand to
assist in the presentation will ba
the ROTC band, the Wainwrighfc
Honor Guard and the Color Guard.
