Queen at Tarleton State
College on May 3.
Miss Young, 20-yearf
old daughter of Mr, and Mrs.
Forest Young of Peters-
burg, is an English major,
She is also a member of the
Student Senate, president-
elect of the E.T.E.R.N.A.S.
social club, a member of
the TTS spirit organization,
and the Tex-Anns, basket-
ball team.
She was freshman

Word To Address Seniors
Senator J.P. Word, an
ex-student of Tarleton State
College, will return to the
campus on May 17 to serve
as guest speaker at the 1970
Spring Commencement exer-
cises. Senator Word is cur-
rently representing Erath
County in the Texas Senate
at Austin.
Senator Word is a well-
known politician to Texans.
His political record began in
1959 when he was elected
County Judge of Bosque
County. He served in this
position until 1962. Later,
in 1963, he was elected to
serve in the State Senate.
During the 61st session
of the Texas legislature,
Senator Word served on such
committees as Agriculture;
Banking; Counties, Districts,
and Urban Affairs; Contin-
gent Expense; Education; In-
surance; Labor and Manage-
ment Relations; Public
Health; State Affairs; and
the Youth Affairs committee.
In addition, he served on
the Water and Conservation
committee and the study com-
mittee on Historical and Rec-
reational Sites. He is pres-
ently chairman of the Senate
General Investigation Com-
mittee and chairman of the
the Nominations Committee.
When the legislature is
not in session, Senator Word
is an attorney in his home-
town of Meridian. He is also
member of the Clifton Lions
a member' of the Clifton,
Lions Club, the Bosque
County -VFW Post No. 6288,
the first Vice-President of
the Central Texas Industrial
Development Council, a
member of the American Le-
gion, and a member of the
Meridian Chamber of Com-
merce.
Senator Word attended
Tarleton State College and
Baylor University. He later
spent 18 months serving the
302nd Military's Intelligence
Service Co. of the United
States Army.
Senator Word and his

TSC Gets Grants
The Office of Education
in Washington has an-
nounced the approval rof
$21,600 for. educational'
opportunity grants for 1970-
1971,
These grants are for
students who show or can
show exceptional need.
The students must come
from families whose in-
come is less than $6,000,
and they must be full time
students.
This is the first time
Tarleton has had this grant
program.
Transfer students who
were eligible for these
grants at other schools may
apply for grants at Tarle-
ton at this time.
Dr. Joseph W. Autry
has been appointed to
succeed Dean Paul A,
Cunyus as dean of instruc-
tion, effective September 1.
, Dr. Autry, who joined
Tarleton in 1946, is cur-
rently head of the Depart-
ment of Agriculture.
' Dr. Autry's appoint-
ment' was approved by the
Texas A&M University
System Board of Directors.
The board also author-
ized . Tarleton officials to'
# seek Coordinating Board
approval to reorganize the
college's academic depart-
ments into .three schools
and create a position of
vice -president.
If approved by the Co-
ordinating Board, Tarleton
will establish a School of
Arts and Sciences, School
of Education, and School
pf Agriculture and Busi-
ness ..
Dr. W.O. Trogdon told
board members the pro-
posed reorganization has
been recommended by ap-
propriate administrative
units of the college, as
well as by its Academic
Council and Self-Study
Committee. Such action
also was suggested last
month by the Southern As-
V*.
sociation of Colleges and
Schools' visiting team for
reaffirmation of accredita-
tion. President W, O. Trog--
don strongly recommended
the appointment of
Dr. Autry.
'I am convinced that
Dr. Autry has the leadership
ability, enthusiam and ad-
ministrative experience re-
quired of a dean of instruc-
tion,' Dr. Trogdon told the
board.
Additionally, board
members approved a record
$4,731,433 operating bud-
get. The 1970^71 budget
represents a $670,868 in-
crease over current ex-
penditures. ,
In other action, the
board awarded! a $14,700
contract to Joe Fambro
Pipe and Construction
Company of Stephenville to
rebuild a portion of Tarle-
ton's livestock center
which burned two years
ago.
The board also formal;-:
ly accepted gifts totaling
$360 for Tarleton, includ-
ing $300 from Miss May
Jones, $25 from Mrs. Billie
Goldston Mayfield, $20
from Gordon D., Ross, and
$15 from Mrs. Davis May-
field.
Dr. Joseph Autry, head of the-Agriculture-Department
at Tarleton, has been appointed to succeed Dean Paul
A. Cunyus as Dean of Instruction. ;
