Industrial Arts Building complete
Mi
by Nancy Rowland
The Industrial Education
pepartment is completing a
$600,000 building and remodeling
project. This includes a new
building that will house offices,
four labs, four classrooms, and a
student resource center plus
remodeling and rearranging the
present building to enlarge present
labs and add new ones.
Dr. James Leeth, head of the
department of Industrial
Education and Technology,
outlined the new facilities in an
recent interview.
The building in present use, built
in 1952, is located behind the
administration building and the
new building is right beside it. The
old building was U-shaped, but
the "U" has been built in and will
be the new automotive lab. Walls
have been moved in the building,
creating larger rooms and new
areas.
Besides the automotive lab, a
plastics lab with injection and
vaccuum form molding machines, a
machine shop, a cast-aluminum
foundry, a welding area, a sheet
metal lab, and a numeric control
lab.
The sheet metal and numeric
control labs are new to the
department. Numeric control has
been taught since 1967 but the
machinery hasn't been available to
practice-, it. In numeric control a
part is described in computer
language. The computer
transcribes the information to a
tape which is read by a machine
that is guided by these directions
to make the mold for the part.
This way,> molds can be made
without fear of error caiised by
someone's hand slipping while
guiding the die-cutter. ■:
The student resource center in
the new building will have; carrels
where students can studyi, listen
to tapes, etc. It also will have
coke, candy, and coffee .machines,
and some, lounge furniture, and
flat tables and chairs. Dr. Leeth is
especially pround of this area and
he feels that the students will be,
too. He thinks that students will
be more inclined to use the study
areas since they are handy and not
isolated from everyone else.

New Year's Day remains in critical
condition, according to his
brother. The student, Lanny Holt,
lost control of his 1972 Ford
pickup on FM 108, approximately
six miles from Stephenville, arid
hit a bridge embankment. A
passenger in the car, University
student Josetta Rogers, suffered a
fracture of the neck.
Both students remain
hospitalized. Ms. Rogers is in
Harris Hospital in Ft. Worth; Holt
is in Hendricks Memorial Hospital
in Abilene. Mike Holt indicated
'that correspondence and flowers
may be sent to his brother at the
hospital; the address is Rt. 7, Box

is hopeful that his brother will
recover. ■ . .
"The new drafting lab will be
one of the finest in any four-year
institution in the state,"'Dr. Leeth
said. It has all new furnishings-3Q
professional quality drafting
tables with automatic lifts,
including five left-handed ones.
Also, there is a large workbench
equipped for airbrush work,
which requires a very precise flow
of ink. Behind the drafting la'b is a
drafting workroom, equipped for
printing blueprints, etc. It will
ultimately become :a ' small
graphics, lab.
The electricity and electronics
lab will be a 10-station lab, with
two students working at each-
station. The materials testing lab
will be the. last to come up to full
capacity, as the inspection and
magnification equipment needed
is very expensive.
The total cost of the project is
$600,000. $120,000 of this has
been alloted for tools and
equipment. The department is
building a lot of their own
furniture. It wasn't a question of
having the money to buy the
furniture, but one of the furniture
not being available.
Architects for the project are
Brush and Dudley of Waco and
Jones and Williams of Waco are
the main contractors. The offices
and classrooms will be moved to
the new building today and they
intend to have everything fully
operational by the start of next
semester.
Dr. Leeth feels that the new
building and more impressive labs
will help in recruiting. Right now,
there are around 120 majors in
the Department of Industrial
Education & Technology,
including two girls.
These new drafting tables are just a sample of the, more than adequate furnishings in the new
Industrial Education and Technology Building.. According to Dr. James Leeth, the drafting
lab is "one of the finest in any four-year institution in the state." Staff Photo
