Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor,
In the last edition of the
J-TAC a letter was addressed to
the editor concerning a
complaint that the StephenviHe
McDonald's franchise a had filed
on a Tarleton Student, This
letter was published without
contacting any management
official at McDonald's. It is our
view that a college newspaper
should have handled the
situation with more finesse than
was shown. Tarleton State is a
four year institution of higher
learning. Institutions of this
nature are usually noted for
responsible attitudes toward
view points of both sides. By
publishing that letter (based on
bias) they have shown the lack
of basic journalistic attitude;
research anything and get both
sides before something is put in
print. Afterall print is
permanent.
Since : it opened over two
years ago McDonald's, along
with the Pizza Inn franchise next
to it, have experienced
numerous losses associated with
theft and vandalism of store
property I In the letter printed in
the Dec. 6 issue of the paper, it
was stated that "they're going to
have to put up with some college
pranks." However, distruction of
property and theft are not
usually classified as pranks.
Under law they are classified as
crimes.
McDonald's had been an avid
supporter of J-TAC publications
and Tarleton State University
through advertisement. It would
be appreciated if in the future
the paper would show the
responsible attitude which is
necessary component for any
well written publication.

poor taste. In this case, the
editor and the faculty advisor
deemed the aforementioned
Dec. 6 letter to be neither,
Mr. Monson mentions that
both sides of the issue were not
researched. This is true, we-
assitme. We do not research a
letter to the editor.
Had an allegation been made '
in an article, the issue would
have been investigated by our

Dear Editor:
During my three years here at
Tarleton a matter has repeatedly
come to my attention, and as a
victim of this matter, I would-
like to know just why it is that
Tarleton students who work on
campus are paid less than
minimum wage.
I am presently employed in
TSU's printing center, whese I
work as a printer. I might add
that I work in a skilled labor
position, and am Tarleton's only
printer. The present minimum
wage standard for unskilled
labor has been set at $3.10 per
hour, yet I am only being paid
$2.90 {a figure I acquired only
four months ago, after the
minimum wage standards had
been at $2.90 for eight months).
Tarleton has consistently paid its
student employees twenty to
fourty cents less than minimum
wage since I have been working
here.
Now, don't get me wrong. I
appreciate this job, and I enjoy
my work. I also enjoy the people
I am working with. I simploy
want to know why the pay scale
is the way it is. Whether the
answer is satisfactory to me or
not, I intend to continue
working here. I am just not
familiar with the laws
concerning employee pay and
would like to be informed of
them.
Thank you,
Ricky Ford

Howdy, I'm the new editor.
Ummm, what am I supposed
to say next? I almost feel like

Well, aside from the obvious,
this is definitely going to be a
different semester.
The spring semester can be
the longest and most tiresome of
the year. Or it can be like spring .
itself—a new beginning.'. Depends
on how you look at it, I guess.
For some folks, it will be the
beginning of new learning
experiences. The ag people, for
instance, have jCist moved back
into their building. .It's gorgeous
and well worth the waid, I'm
sure.
For the fine arts majors'and
minors, this is the end of an era
for sure. Now you can go to a
play and not have to choose
between being warm and
wondering what the dickens the
actors are saying, or freezing to
death and knowing for sure that
someone dropped a Coke can
backstage and that it rolled for
three miles before someone
could pick it up.
Speaking of fine arts, we're
trying something new this week:
an entertainment section. We
hope to have not only campus
activities, but city
entertainments as well.
The J-TAC staff wants to
start a tacky classified section,
too. Anything you want to say
to someone else, well, just go
right ahead. Cliff gives you
directions dri page 13.
In addition, the College Press
Service will continue as a regular
feature and keep you informed
about what's happening on other
campuses across the nation. This
week you can learn why
presidential candidates don't
