Wisdom Scholarship available for history majors
The Evelyn Wisdom Endowed Scholarship Fund has been created at Tarleton State
University and will benefit history students in the Department of Social Sciences. The endowed
scholarship was created through a $40,000 gift from the estate of Evelyn Wisdom.
Evelyn's 91-year old sister Kathleen, and a cousin, Lou McPherson, worked with Hamilton
Attorney Connie White and Tarleton's Vice President for Institutional Advancement Dr. Koy Floyd in
establishing the generous scholarship fund. The Wisdom sisters were nieces of Tarleton's legendary
coach W. J. Wisdom.
''Both Evelyn and Kathleen spent many years educating Texas children in public schools
around the state/' said Floyd, "It seems very appropriate that the tradition continues through this
endowment which will help to educate future generations."
Born in Pottsville in 1907, Evelyn Wisdom attended school at Lund before the family moved
to Stephenville in 1921. She graduated from Stephenville High School and received her certificate in
Home Economics from John Tarleton Agricultural College in 1925. She began teaching that fall at
Lund Valley and later taught at Indian Gap, Rochelle, and Vista Mountain. She also taught at San
Marcos while attending Southwest State Teachers College where she received the Bachelor's degree
in history in 1938. She later earned her Masters degree from the University of Texas at El Paso.
Wisdom taught second graduate at Hamilton for one year before moving to El Paso County
where she taught at Tomillo for five years and in the El Paso public schools for 27 years until her
retirement in 1971. Ms. Wisdom died last summer at the age of 92.
Kathleen is 91 years old and living in Hamilton.'
The Evelyn Wisdom Endowed Scholarship will be awarded annually through the
Department of Social Sciences at Tarleton. Candidates for the scholarship must be full time students
seeking a history major who are in good academic standing with a 3.0 or better grade point average.
