Faculty and Staff Appreciation
Day was held in theTrogdon
House.Tarleton memorabilia
and photos were displayed
for students, staff and faculty
to view. According to Elvis
Moya, academic affairs chair-
man for SGA, the
Appreciation Day was start-
ed because the students of
Tarleton felt that the faculty
and staff are "dedicated
individuals who make
Tarleton a qi(ality learning
environment."

Former student analyzes OJ trial as learning tool

On March 1 the depart-
ment of communications
and fine arts hosted a for-
mer Tarleton student, Lin S.
Lilley to speak about her
new book, "The t O.J.
Simpson Trials: Rhetoric,
Media, and the Law."
Lilley wrote the book
geared toward journalism
or pre-law college students
to use a tool in the class-
room.
Lilley's analysis of the
trial evaluated how the
media created a public
frenzy concerning the ver-
dict of the O.J. Simpson
ADVERTISE
IN THE
J-TAC
call
trial.
The media tension
caused an addiction to the
publicized televised trial.
O.J. was tried in two cases,
a criminal and a civil.
The criminal case lasted
eight months. The jury had
reasonable doubt, therefore
the verdict was not guilty.
The civil case only lasted
two months and the jury's
verdict was guilty.
In Lilley's presentation
she explained how. both
verdicts from the civil and
criminal cases were reason-
able.
"With the different rul-
ings of each case, they were
both accurate", said Lilley.
She also explained the
themes of the civil and
criminal cases of the
Defense and Plaintiff.
Lilley attended Tarleton
and graduated in 1970 with
a BA in Speech and Drama.
Upon graduation she
taught Speech Education,
Public Speaking, and
Creative Dramatics at
Tarleton from 1971-75.
"It is a special trip and
feels like a homecoming
being back at Tarleton,"
said Lilley.
Lilley is a native to cen-
tral Texas. She is originally
from Lampasas.
She is currently working
for Southwest Trial
Consulting Inc. and has
been consulting trial
lawyers for the past 25
years,
Her specialties are in
"Persuasion" and the
"Apologia." Lilley does
training for attorneys in
how to select a jury that is
suitable and will benefit
their clients.
If you are interested in
her book, contact Lilley at

Simpson Trials: Rhetoric,
Media, and the Law" is

Women's History Month
Jones speaks on women's progress
By Caleb Chapman
Staff writer
On Tuesday, March 7, ninety people lis-
tened to Linda Jones speak at the 4th
annual Women's History Month
Luncheon sponsored by student activi-
ties.
Jones is the Dean of Graduate Studies
and the first ever woman selected to be a
dean at Tarleton. She spoke of many
other firsts that she has accomplished in
her life.
Jones grew up in Port Vincent
Louisiana and was one of the few from
her hometown to go to college. At that
time women didn't have many degree
plan options.
Teaching, nursing, and some business
degrees were all that were available to
women. Jones decided that she wanted
to get a teaching degree.
She began teaching in a public school
where they were in their first year of
desegregation. She taught there for five
years before moving to Texas. Her first
university level teaching position was at
the University of Mary Hardin Baylor.
While in Belton, she became involved
in the Chamber of Commerce and vari-
ous other city organizations. The city
was impressed with her work with the
city and awarded her the "Man of the
Year" Award.
, She jokingly talked about how the city
had never elected a women to that posi-
tion before. It has changed since then,
but she is glad that her's had those words
on it.
She spoke about how women do have
to work harder than men to achieve the
same goal, but that the opportunity is
still there.
"I don't believe anyone will be kept
from their goals or their dreams," she
said, "Your life, your career will be extra-
ordinary if you prepare yourself for it."
She emphasized what an important
factor a good attitude played in women
succeeding. She said that many times it's
women themselves that do the harm.
"We have to improve our own percep-
tion of ourselves...women tend to stereo-
type other women," she said.
Jones said that the "bitch factor" often
plays a role in women's behavior. She
talked about how statistics show' most
women would rather work for a male
than another women.
Bossy men are considered assertive,
but women of the same demeanor are
considered aggressive. She commented
on how other statistics show that men are
more comfortable with a woman presi-
dent than women are.
Her speech was focused toward
Tarleton students but she was disap-
pointed by the low number of students in
attendance.
She said that women have contributed
a great deal to society and this luncheon
was a great opportunity to focus on what
women have contributed.
Jones feels that Tarleton takes women's
issues seriously.
However, others may think differently
because of the slow process of improve-
ment. She also said that there are plenty
of opportunities for women at Tarleton
"We've made tremendous strides in
the last 4 years," she said, "If you come in
and take hold of the reigns, you will do
well here."
