Spec/ai to The J-TAC
Tyler, Steve and Amanda, make the Wilkinsons. Could they be country music's next big thing?
The Wilkinsons new CD proves pleasant
By Justin Taylor

Are the Wilkinsons the
Patridge family
for the year
' 2000? Maybe
so. They seem
to be one of the
most amazing
success stories
in contempo-
rary music.
Virtually
unknown two
years ago, the
family trio has
received more,
nominations,
awards and
honors in two years than most
artists have in a lifetime. Their
CD "Here and Now" proves
quite a treat. I can honestly say
I did not know that country
could sound this good.
The CD "Here and Now" pre-
sents a variety of sounds. Each
member of the family brings
something totally different to
the table. Tyler (the young man
of the group) has an voice that
sounds immature. It is as if he
hasn't reached the pinnacle of
his singing career. Th6 bl'de'r1 Sis-
ter Amanda's voice is mature
and songbird-esque. She pre-
sents the middle ground
between the father and the son.
The father's voice is rough in a
good sort of way. It relays the
experience he's had in his life
and reveals his maturity and
responsibility in his singing.
Together all three voices seem
to blend perfectly, each one fill-
ing a spot where the other
might lack.
"Here and Now" also boasts
quite a few instruments. Each
song presents something differ-
ent. Whether it be the playful
guitar accompaniment of
"Hypothetically" or the electric
guitar of "1999," the Wilkinsons
are sure to please the ear.
Maybe the reason I had such
an easy time listening to this
country CD is because at times
it straddles the fence between
country and pop. I mean,
Shania does it, so why can't the
Wilkinsons? Though some peo-
ple would say that they are not
true country, I would have to
disagree because they simply
give you a taste of pop, then
pull you back in with the sor-

music is famous jbp " " "
Each song the tfi'd-fftd&entS3
plays upon experiences of peo-
ple share within their lifetimes.
The first track "Jimmy's Got a
Girlfriend," allowed me to
think back to the time of my
first girlfriend and the nervous-
ness I experienced. This CD is
perfect thinking music because
you just throw it on and relax
to let your thoughts come to
you. You never know what
memories "Here and Now"
might bring up. There are so
many situations within the CD.
I believe that adds to the magic
of the CD.
I don't think I would have
ever bought the Wilkinsons for
my own personal collection but
1 am glad that I reviewed their
CD. Like many other forms of
music, they provide their listen-
ers with eccentric variety and
leave them wanting more. The
Wilkinsons adapt to every song
they sing. Hopefully we will
see more from this singing fam-
ily in the future. Once again, I
hope to be pleasantly surprised
by the next country CD I
review.

Terra Nova's dark demeanor triumphs
By Justin Taylor
Entertainment Editor
I do believe I am getting bet-
ter at this whole "culture"
thing. The first time I went to a
Tarleton play, I was bored to
tears. It was a good show but I
just didn't appreciate the work
put into it. As the years have
gone by, I now realize that I
have a better appreciation of
the skill that goes into the pro-
duction of each play that is put
on at this campus. It also helps
that my roommate is a theater
major. "Terra Nova" is no
> exception to his high level of
quality. The Theater
Department must be tired of
reading these reviews because
everyone I write is good.
This play is about a race to
Antarctica between five
Englishmen and five
Norwegians in the winter of
1911-1912; Only the
} Norwegians returned. This

j five,Englishmeru Scott, the,
leader of the Englishmen, is
played by James H. Brownlee.
Acting as his psychological foil
is the leader of the
Norwegians, Amundsen,
played by Daniel Macchietto.
Brownlee and Macchietto were
amazing, playing these parts to
a tee. I've seen them both
before, and personally I think
Brownlee plays a perfect stuffy
Englishman. Though the coun-
tries and situations were totally
different in "The Doll's House,"
Brownlee just seems to have
that ability to put on that regal
aire. He almost makes you
think he is better than you
while on the stage. As his char-
acter relinquishes emotion, it's
easy to follow his breakdown
and that can be defined only as
good acting,
Macchietto's role in this play
was philosophical, forcing the
main character to inspect him-
self. His goading and instruc-
tions kept me spellbound. Even
as a waiter, he performed well.
Scott's crew really brought
the play f6 life. Their interac-
tions withjhe captain forces ;
him into an introverted spiral.
At the end of the play each of
the members of the crew
stands out within your mind.
There were few props in this
play, but 1 think that made me
focus more on the acting. It
also did well to represent the
barren wasteland of the
Antarctic. I think it worked
really well for this play, It cre-
ated an abstract scene, which
allowed for the audience to
concentrate on the actors and
the music. And speaking of the
music, it was pretty good as
well. To me, good music is
when you don't even think
about it - it just kind of melds
into the scene, saturating into
each word of the actors.
Joshua Bradford did an excel-
lent job.Though the lighting
before intermission made it
hard to focus upon the play, all
in all, Terra Nova was nice.
I wish there had been more
people for the opening night of
the play. "Terra Nova" provid-
ed an in depth play with an
excellent cast. Congratulations
to director Mark Holtorf. Yoti

A little Texas magic comes to Tarleton
By Justin Taylor
Entertainment editor
Eminem once asked if people
wanted to see him stick "nine
inch nails through each one of
his eyelids." In this day and
age, I think a majority of peo-
ple would answer yes. Things
like that have always captivat-
ed humanity. Especially now,
in this time of technology
something that cannot be
explained easily snags hold of
the imagination and doesn't let
go. There are people who make
an art of such feats. Part scien-
tists, part illusionists, these
people are graced with the
ability to cloud men's minds.
They are modern magicians.
Brian Brushwood is one of
these people. In his childhood
he was always captivated by
magic and found it easy to
interact with people. However,
he did not focus on the art
until he was accepted into the
Honors II program at the
University of Texas at Austin,
Yes, it does take brains to mes-
merize people. For his senior
honor thesis, he even con-
vinced his professors to let him
put on a magic show. Now that
takes talent.
This magician promises to
put on a show that could capti-
vate even the most fervent dis-
believer. His show includes
fire-eating, a straightjacket
escape and trick he calls the

about you, but I'm willing to
watch someone do this to him-
self. Call me sadistic or maybe
curious. It's your call.
We already had a magician
come to Tarleton earlier this
year and he was a great suc-
cess, I can only assume that
SPA would want to out do
themselves by bringing Brian
Brushwood to Tarleton State
University.
Brushwood has won many
awards including "Best
Comedy Magic" and "Best Club
Magic." He will be here at
Tarleton this Friday, March 31
at 7:30 pm. The will be held in
the SDC Ballrooms. For more
information, please call the
office of Student Activities at
968-9490, Be sure you make it
out on Friday night. I heard
last time the magician gave out
a little cash.
This event is sponsored by
SPA so be sure to thank them if
you happen to see one of them
walking around. After all, it's
not everyday you get to see
someone stick nails into their
body.
