New Texan Cards designed
to protect student identities
By PATRICK CHARLES WRIGHT
J-TAC Staff
In ail effort to protect student identities,
the newly designed Texan cards are now
available without the traditional Social Secu-
rity number,
"The new Texan cards are about remov-
ing Social Security numbers from cards and
putting the student IDs on them. The Texas
Higher Education Code requires all schools
to remove Social Security numbers on ID
cards/' Sally Young, ID card administrator,
said.
While the;new Texan cards have no add-,
ed functions, the design has changed, adding
a picture of the Administration Building.
Last semester the Texan card office add-
ed the ability for cards to be used off campus'
for students to buy such things as food, dry
cleaning, haircuts, textbooks and more.
"We haven't set a deadline for how long
students can get the new cards, but before
Spring Break, hopefully. I'll send an e-mail
two weeks before Spring Break, saying the
old cards won't work and that students must
get the new cards/' Young said.
Every semester students pay a $10-ID fee
on their tuition bill that is not a purchase fee,
but rather a maintenance fee that maintains
student records in the ID system. While the
jnitial.new card is free, replacements for lost
or damaged cards will be $10.
"I think the new Texan cards are an at-
tractive card with the administration build1
ing on the card. Mario Vasquez in the graphic
■ design office came up with the design for the
card. "We also talked of putting the Thomp-
son Student Center or Science Building on
the new card," Young said.

IFC recruits
members for
spring rush
By KYLE HAGBERY
J-TAC Staff
More than just an invitation to wear T-shirts emblazoned with
Greek letters, a chance to party, or an opportunity to meet girls; the
Interfraternal Council (IFC) recruitment is really a "rush'' to attract new
members through events that feature information slide shows, games
and speeches concerning all of the nationally recognized fraternities at
Tarleton.
,' During this past week (and at the beginning of fall semester) the
IFC recruitment was a buzz of activities in which "rushies" and estab-
, lished leaders and members became acquainted.
Many have seen the table in front of the library with all of the Greek
letters,on it,promoting something about recruitment Some continue
walking past the fraterrtity table, but for those who stop to fill out a
form, the following week is filled with parties, food and girls. •
The interpretation of the "party ing/'iri this' case, is not a nine kegger
blpvvout like the one at homecoming. These IFC activities drew com-
pletely sober students who walked around and got to know each other
and discovered what each is about, Information provided through dis-
plays/ games and speeches presented what each particular fraternity
does during the year.
Some participants have reported that the spring rush is slightly
lackadaisical compared to that in the fall because of the difference
in the number of men entering th'e recruitment process. The formal

Textbooks: A necessary evil

The beginning of a semester is often met with
disdain. However, this scorn is not entirely because
of having to return to classes. A fresh new semester
signals the student body to open up their wallets
and turn them over. One of the largest costs stu-
dents face is the price of textbooks.
The most common source for textbooks is the
Tarleton Campus Store. Students can cash in their
book vouchers and purchase textbooks using stu-
dent Loan money. In addition, money spent at the
Campus Store recycles and helps out the students.
