Kayla Stewart, freshman Pre-Vet major gives blood on Monday. Overall, 39 pints of blood were donated.
Continued from page 4
The actual process of drawing your blood takes
about five to ten minutes, and they keep you highly
entertained the entire time, especially if you are a ner-
vous first-timer like me. My arm felt kind of tingly
and achy; not enough to be painful, just slightly ir-
ritating. I did feel a little nauseas and hot at first, but
that may be due to how ridiculously nervous I was
before they even started. They gave me a bottle of wa-
fer (drink this slowly—a sure fire way to get sick in
{he chair is to guzzle whatever they give you) and put
wet rags on my forehead and throat, which helped
immensely. The important thing is to communicate
how you are feeling to the phlebotomist. Everyone
reacts differently to having blood taken, but the phle-
botomists are trained in how to handle it. They know
fiow to help you, and more encouragingly, they want
(p.
The whole thing was over before 1 knew it, and I
didn't even realize when David took out the needle.
They always have snacks on-site (this time there was
$ delicious cake), and it is important that you take
your time getting up and make sure you are com-
pletely ready before you try to walk. There was a girl
ahead of me who passed out, but she tried to move
too fast. It is OK to be slow. The phlebotomists would
rather you be careful than unconscious or make your-
self sick.
After the whole process is over they give you a
list of instructions and tell you not to consume to-
bacco for the first 30 minutes and to drink plenty of
(non-alcoholic) fluids. Don't do anything strenuous
and wait 56 days before giving blood again. Your arm
may ache a little and bruise, but it is nothing to cause
concern. I like to think of my dime-sized bruise as a
small symbol of my bravery.
If you are afraid of needles and you do dedde
to give blood, you will enjoy not only the attention
during and after the process and the satisfaction of
conquering a fear, but, also the fact that you can help
save two people with your blood. Altogether 39 pints
of blood were donated on Monday, including mine.
That is potentially 78 people whose lives will be saved
by Tarleton students, faculty and staff. Plus they mail
you a neat little card in six-to-eight weeks with all
your information, including your blood type.
I am not denying the fact that giving blood is a
little uncomfortable, but something that even this
slightly aichmophobic person thinks is worth the
time and discomfort. I hope to see you all in about 56
days, the next time I will be giving blood.
