The Center for Diversity Iiulktivcs \ a
conjunction with the Tarleton Counseling
Center held a program tilled "Me-We-Me:
Relationships - The Good, the .Bad and
the Ugly" in the multipurpose room of
the library Mond ay at 5 p.m. The speaker
was Cfuistopiier ,StanIey~Stevem, who
works in the counseling center.
Stanley-Stevens focused on roman-
tic relationships and discussed the many
aspects that go with that type of con-
nections. He discussed the parts of his
"me-we-mc model/' based on the tfowen
Family Systems Theory of the 1950s.
"The first pai t starts with'we/VVe are
pack animals, and we like to be part of
a group/' At the same time, Stanley-Ste-
vens said, we are clearly individual be--
ings7 a fact that is especially emphasized
in our Western culture.
"These needs exist in a tension/7 he
said* "For example,,so much of your uni-
versity experience is devoted to finding
something that you love to do and some-
where you can get paid to do it/'
llus difficult balance is also crucial in
relationships.
"It is important to have your own life,
otherwise you'll get sucked, into theirs/'
said Stanley-Stevens.
The second part of the me-wevme
model addresses our expecta tjons of how
to achieve our goals and aspirations.
"What's interesting about a relation-
ship is that you have two people, each
bringing their own set of hopes, dreams,
goals, and aspirations. What becomes the
challenge is "how do we balance out our
own sets of expectations about how we're
going to get this fundamental thing that
we ail wont?'" He said.
Sianley^Stevens used demonstra-
tions with volunteers to illustrate Ms
points. For "too much 'we'" ile had two
volunteers lean on each other to signify
the over-dependence that can sometimes

20 key points
every freshman
should know
By KELSEY
FITZGIBBON
Staff Writer
The Student Program-
ming Association hosted "20
Key Points Every Freshman
Should Know/' Sept. 19,
in the Thompson Student
Center Ballrooms. Award
winner David Coleman, aka
"America's Real-Life Hitch/'
highlighted many first year
experiences of a typical
freshman.
Roughly 200 students,
including nine members of
the Purple Poo, attended
the "date doctor's" session,
and although the message
was geared mainly toward
freshmen, Coleman ad-
dressed many upper classmen
as well. Those who attended
Duck Camp this year may be
familiar with Coleman's re-
lationship advice, which he
used to open his speech.
"The number one thing
that will bring you back to
Tarleton is relationships,"
Coleman stressed.
He encouraged involve-
ment with campus activities
as a way of meeting friends
and forming lasting relation-
ships. He also gave audience
members *a chance to ask for
specific advice, such as how to
deal with long distance rela-
tionships or a difficult break-
up.
After a "pick-up line"
challenge with the audience,

Coleman shifted to discuss-
ing academic situations that
many students face, espe-
cially during their first year
of college. From hardships
involved with commuting, to
tips on communicating with
a problematic roommate,
his key points covered many
questions freshmen may
have,
Coleman's blunt humor
and wit kept the audience en-
tertained and many activities
required audience interaction.
Even the Purple Poo were able
to "find their hmm," his code
word for talking to someone
you find attractive. Before
their departure, the audience
raised Oscar P, which judging
by his reaction, was a first for
Coleman.
Coleman also announced
plans for his new television se-
ries, "Boyfriend Boot Camp,"
which will turn average boy-
friends into the perfect man,
or at least something close to
him. He is currently looking
for contestants, and encour-
aged TSU students to apply
