Stephenville is more than Just A College Town
By Jacque Rogers
Features Editor
There are many advantages to liv-
ing in Stephenville, Texas. Listed
below are only a few of the many
reasons Stephenville, Texas is a
great place to live.
First of all, of course, is the col-
lege atmosphere of the town.
Tarleton State University is located
in the heart of Stephenville. With
its 83 buildings situated on 131
acres and its always increasing en-
rollment, TSU keeps Stephenville
alive and prospering. The student
body at Tarleton consists largely of
students from small towns who
bring' with them their friendly and
courteous attitudes. These students
know the importance of the indi-
vidual attention they receive at
Tarleton. The transition from high
school to college is considered
smoother at TSU than at a larger
University for small-town students.
For big-city students, Stephenville
is like a breath of fresh air.
Stephenville is located in West
Central Texas approximately 207
miles north of San Antonio, 65
miles west of Fort Worth and 100
miles southwest, of Dallas. The
population was 16,100 in 1990.
United States Highway 377 and 67
- FM 8 and 2157 run east and west
to Stephenville and U.S. Highway
281, State Highway 108 and FM
914 run north and south to
Stephenville.
The annual average climate is 64
degrees (January 44, July 83) and
the average annual rainfall is 30.9
inches.
Career Services Opens Doors
Career Services, located on the
second floor of the Tarleton Center,
offers a variety of resources to as-
sist students in the various levels of
their educational career. A fresh-
man or a forward- thinking junior
can find the resources for part-time
employment or the first step toward
a career.
As a Freshman, the Part-Time
Job Board can serve as an introduc-
tion to the Stephenville area and the
opportunities available to give the
student budget a boost.
Upperclassmen will find the board a
valuable assistance in maintaining a
survival mode during the course of
gaining an education. Area busi-
ness people post their openings and
the board is updated by Career
Services personnel. Also listed for
the industrious student are the On-
Campus Jobs as they become avail-
able as well as the Work-Study
Jobs, Work-Study Jobs must be-
gin with an application in the
Financial Aid Office which then
gives' approval and forwards to
Career Services for posting. Check
the board for listings and then pro-
ceed to Financial Aid.
Career Counseling is available
through the Counseling Center, but
the Career Services Center offers re-
source materials to guide the un-
dergraduate in a job search. A new
program called "SIGI" will be of-
fered in the near future to assist the
undergraduate with aptitude testing.
Sourcebooks are provided listing
employment and opportunities with
state and federal agencies, indepen-
dent companies and corporations,
school districts, and indus-
trial/manufacturing plants.
Networking opportunities are of-
fered through on-campus contacts as
well as industry. Resume assis-
tance (yes, "resume" will become
part of your professional vocabu-
lary) is available in the Career
Services center. Call for an ap-
pointment and specify your particu-
lar resume problems. Mock inter-
views are part of the Career
Services program and are taped for
re-play to let the prospective em-
ployee gain insight into his/her
personal strengths or weaknesses.
A library of self-help books and
tapes are available on a daily basis.
A personal computer with a laser
printer is provided for student use
and requires only a reservation if in
use at the time of the student visit.
Companies are invited to conduct
on-campus interviews and are
scheduled from September through
May. An interview packet must be
on file with Career Services in order
to sign up fore company inter-
views. The interview packet is
simple and easy to assemble. A
one-page data sheet must be com-
pleted; a resume and final transcript
completes the file. Undergraduates
should make it a point to complete
the interview packet no later than
the second semester of their junior
year. Bright blue posters are used
by Career Services to advertise job
openings, employment opportuni-
ties, and related events.
Each Fall and Spring semesters,
companies and school districts visit
the Campus Career Day, Nursing
Fair, and Education Job Fair.
During a Career Day, companies set
up tables, distribute materials, and
network with Tarleton students.
Follow-up interviews are scheduled
if the recruiter has requested them.
Once again, an interview packet
must be on file in order to inter-
view. During Job Fairs, the proba-
bility of job opportunities are

Student Government
By Jacque Rogers
Features Editor
The members of Student
Government at Tarleton believe that
student participation is essential to
the success of their program.
They encourage all students to
join Student Government and to be
active in the organizations Tarleton
has to offer. By doing so, students
will make a difference at TSU and
will feel better about themselves as
well.

students at TSU:
"Welcome to the home of the
"Purple and White". While you are
here - Get Involved! Make A
Difference!

things to offer: expansion of
knowledge, organizations, athletics,
fun, and friendship.

stage in your life. Take part in the
pride, tradition, and excellence that
is Tarleton State University."
