Students get physical by
participating in Rec Sports
By Todd Ward
Sports Editor
You thought those old glory days of
high school athletics were over? Or do
you like "extreme" sports?
Is water skiing more your speed? The
Office of Recreational Sports can keep
you in shape year round.
Some of the most popular recreational
sports are volleyball, basketball, softball,
and flag football. Each of these sports are
offered as team events in men's, women's and
co-rec leagues.
Students may join an existing team or form one
of there own. If you want to play, but don't have
a team, you can be placed on free-agent list for
possible drafting,
These sports are played in a tournament style,
with a regular season and playoffs rounding out
the season. N
The league champions go on to compete at
larger tournaments against other colleges.
If you are interested in "alternative sports," the
Tarleton Challenge might be of interest to you.
The Challenge is open all semester and can
provide a challenging yet fulfilling day of out-
door activity including simulated rock climbing,
and many group activities that require teamwork
and cooperation by all involved.
These activities include a high and low ropes
course and a swing bridge for added challenges.
There is a big buck contest starting November
4 lasting the entire length of deer season and is
open to all licensed hunters.
Bucks will be scored by Boone and Crockett
guidelines.
There will also be a golf scramble in

The recreational sports program also offers an
opportunity for students to gain employment as
officials and referees.
The office of Rec Sports hires thirty to forty
officials to call the intramural games.
Students do not have to have any experience in
officiating, rec sports provides a training work-
shop that lasts two to three hours and consists of
rules, procedures and techniques of officiating,
Robert Nimmo, assistant director of recreation-
al sports would like to encourage every student
to get involved in some type of extra curricular
activity.
"It has never been so easy to get involved in
such a numerous and diverse span of activities,
said Nimmo.
"These wonderful sports allow students to
meet and associate with new friends in a compet-
itive environment. The friends you make in col-
lege are friends you will keep for the rest of you
life."
